TRS Event 2025 TRS Fall Colors Campout

Page 6 has all the goodies
That's the same one I have. It's worked great.

Now that the Vagabond trip is over, I can concentrate on this more. I updated the participant list based on responses in this thread. I’m going to work on putting together a scenic ride, hopefully with some cool things to see.

Join us for a Relaxing Fall Colors Campout!
October 2 - 5, 2025 - in Cass, West Virginia

We will be staying at Whittaker Campground
1167 Gum Rd, Cass, WV 24927
(304) 456-3218

Campground rates are $30 per night for primitive tent camping, more for water/electric hookups or trailers/RVs. If we have enough committed participants by early April, I will negotiate a group discounted rate. If that happens, I may need to have you send me your reservation money so I can make payment as a group. More details on this as it develops.

Respond in this forum thread so I know how much interest we have. I'll keep an updated list of participants here.

Itinerary will remain simple. This is just a fun time to relax and enjoy our friendships. There are beautiful mountain roads to explore - mostly paved. The town of Cass, WV is a living museum with museum displays, walking tours, Rides on historic trains and a restaurant. also nearby is the Green Bank Observatory, featuring a variety of space radio telescopes, walking tours and educational displays. Cass is also the northern terminus of the Greenbrier River Trail. A 78mile long hiking/biking trail that follows old railroad beds along the river. Depending on who is coming and what help I have, maybe we can do our traditional campfire pizza or some other fun group meal. I will keep this thread updated as details develop further.

Important Info;
  • Cass and a large surrounding area is a radio exclusion zone to prevent interference with the Radio Observatory. There is no Cell service in the area. The Town of Cass provides free WiFi.
If you think you will want to ride the trains, reserve your tickets early in the year. Waiting until that weekend, the trains will likely be booked full. There are several different routes/destinations. I strongly recommend the Cass Bald Knob trip for it's views. info and reservations here; https://mountainrailwv.com/train-rides/cass-scenic-bald-knob-trip/
  • The campground is fairly simple. There IS a small, adequate bath-house and firewood is free. That's about all.

Participants;
  • Eric B. AKA; Curious Hound
  • JohnnyO & Judy
  • Grandma & Jessica

Strong tentative;
  • Robertmangrum.rm
  • UncleGump

Grandma?

If the house slippers fit...

So I’ve had this on my calendar…

It’s not looking like it’s going to happen though…

I’ll be lucky if the Ranger is done in time but it’s not looking good. Even if it’s done I’m likely not going to have the money. Choptop has issues. F-150 is limping. Lisa will probably tell me that we’ll just take her car but yeah…

I did NOT type “Grandma”. Either some stupid #**%^*^^ AI spellcheck changed it or one of our fun-loving cohorts here in the group changed it.

Sorry.

Judging by the edit history it looks like its your spellcheck.

I would have came up with something better than "Grandma"... but then the off-the-wallness of it adds to it as well.

We got new phones at work and I forgot to go into settings and turn off autocorrect. That was fun. First day back from the Vagabond trip. I get to work and my phone is in SOS mode. Never got a chance to move or save photos, contacts or anything. Just go to the lady’s office and she transferred my account to the new phone and wiped the old one. Everything gone.

it is not looking good for me coming. too many little things going on with the Ranger, and an 8 hour drive for the Ranger is a bit more than I want to subject it to at this point. Could take the Edge.. but will likely go on a vacation with my family later in October. not enough vacation days and not enough money to do both....

I've created a route for a scenic ride in the mountains.

@Curious Hound did you ever get a confirmation from Whitaker Campground? They told me they would send one after they cashed the check. So far, nothing.

I regret to admit. I just called him this morning to make a reservation. My check will get mailed out tomorrow morning.

With that said, i wouldn't sweat it. He is not great with computer stuff- website design, email, social media, etc. He's a good guy. It's just that life is very simple in that area, especially with the radio blackout. He told me today to just let him know a day or so in advance, regarding what time I'll be showing up. The campground, especially tent camping, won't be crowded. I voluntarily told him I would send a check with dates, email address, and any other pertinent info. The term "laid back" would express extreme formality in this situation. If you have records that he received and deposited your check, I would consider that adequate.

For JohnnyO, with a camper and probably wanting water and electric hookups, things are slightly different. He will be in the upper part of the campground if he wants that stuff. Those of us in tents or more self-sufficient will probably have almost the whole lower loop to ourselves. We may take over the spur that heads down toward the railroad tracks. I'll figure that out when I get there, also with weather forecast considered.

I plan on getting there on Wednesday and staying until Sunday. I'll draw a simple sketch of the campground and post it here before that week.

I hope we get some more people coming. What is there that isn't awesome about crisp fall days in the mountains in October when the leaves are colored? I guess I could offer hot mulled cider.

How about this; if we get a total of 4 or more people/families actually 100% committed by Sept. 20 (not counting me), I'll do campfire pizzas Saturday night.
