My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Join us for a Relaxing Fall Colors Campout!
October 2 - 5, 2025 - in Cass, West Virginia

We will be staying at Whittaker Campground
1167 Gum Rd, Cass, WV 24927
(304) 456-3218

Campground rates are $30 per night for primitive tent camping, more for water/electric hookups or trailers/RVs. If we have enough committed participants by early April, I will negotiate a group discounted rate. If that happens, I may need to have you send me your reservation money so I can make payment as a group. More details on this as it develops.

Respond in this forum thread so I know how much interest we have. I'll keep an updated list of participants here.

Itinerary will remain simple. This is just a fun time to relax and enjoy our friendships. There are beautiful mountain roads to explore - mostly paved. The town of Cass, WV is a living museum with museum displays, walking tours, Rides on historic trains and a restaurant. also nearby is the Green Bank Observatory, featuring a variety of space radio telescopes, walking tours and educational displays. Cass is also the northern terminus of the Greenbrier River Trail. A 78mile long hiking/biking trail that follows old railroad beds along the river. Depending on who is coming and what help I have, maybe we can do our traditional campfire pizza or some other fun group meal. I will keep this thread updated as details develop further.

Important Info;
  • Cass and a large surrounding area is a radio exclusion zone to prevent interference with the Radio Observatory. There is no Cell service in the area. The Town of Cass provides free WiFi.
If you think you will want to ride the trains, reserve your tickets early in the year. Waiting until that weekend, the trains will likely be booked full. There are several different routes/destinations. I strongly recommend the Cass Bald Knob trip for it's views. info and reservations here; https://mountainrailwv.com/train-rides/cass-scenic-bald-knob-trip/
  • The campground is fairly simple. There IS a small, adequate bath-house and firewood is free. That's about all.

I'm making plans to attend. I still need to bid for vacation and see if Jessica's schedule will work with that. So, there are some unknowns in there at the moment.

Would love to have you both.

I may be a last minute attendee. I will have to see closer to time. With 2 trips already planned I'm gonna be tight on time off. I've been wanting to see more of WV. I only snow ski there. Would love to see it in color. It's always white when I see it haha

Jessica is all for it. I think the train might have been what sealed it for her. Details will have to be worked out when I get home.

I'm not sure how many road trips I have in me this coming year.

It sounds like fun... I love some good fall colors... and the history around there would be nice to experience.

We're gonna have to get way closer before I commit though.

Interested. Count me in tentatively. Will see how the new job settles in

I just found something else we might be able to do that weekend. Some of these abandoned tunnels should be nearby. Sounds like some fun exploring.

Probably. It's not that far from me.

Sounds like a lot of enjoyment.
But sorry to say I can't attend.:(

I didn't map it but it looks like it might be an hour and a half, two hour drive for us. It depends on the roads and how mountainous that section of WV is.

Mountainous. But not quite as rough as it is further west in the coal regions of WV.

Hmmm. Starting to get some good "maybes" and "probablys".

Where's @fastpakr and @James Morse . They're pretty close to this one.

That's right. I'm not afraid to name names.

It's in a different state.
So I'm not allowed.
Besides I got no money anyways.
