2011 Ranger XLT - Transfer case will not shift - DTC 1891-6F, 1867-2F

Well, now it has a new trick.

I took the motor off, hooked my bench supply to it, and tried to run it both ways. Turns out, even switching polarity it only goes one way off the bench supply.

No matter. Ran the motor around, stuck it back on the truck, and hooked it up. It wound itself back around to 2wd. Cool. Life signs.

Now, when I shift to 4H, it goes to shift into 4wd, gets there, then returns to 2wd.

I'll upload a video.

Is the 4WD light flashing when it returns to 2WD, that means the controller is not seeing the contacts in the shift motor changing so its resetting

No flashing lights. Or lights coming/staying on for 4x4.

Down to code 1867 only now, and can be reset with forscan

The Controller is not getting info from the shift motor sensor, for position, so it starts to move the motor and when there is no change in the position sensors it moves it back to last "known" position

You could test sensors/contacts using this chart

Not sure wire colors are the same but the way it works is
There is one Common wire, the yellow/white in this case
The other 4 wires are either connected to it(short) or not(open)

4H-4L is Neutral, just FYI

You can manually power the motor to test sensor/contacts to see what Controller sees

Found 2010 4WD wiring, looks like the brown/white is the Common wire
But thats the truck side of wiring, shift motor harness may have different colors
