Does anyone that owns or has driven a 2010 Ranger have any opinions on the traction control? Does it really work as good as a limited slip in snow that Ford thought they could drop the limited slip option?

I think I've only seen one guy on here that has a 2010 Ranger.

If I'm not mistaken I believe most traction control systems simply apply brake pressure to a wheel that is detected as spinning to send the power to the opposite wheel. Which in theory I would imagine works just as well as a limited slip, if not better, so long as you're looking for bad terrain traction and not trying to drag race. Perhaps AllanD or somebody can supply a slightly more technical explanation.

Your best bet is probably going to be checking edmunds or something like that for reviews. It seems like most people here, like myself, have an appreciation for things that are older and better built than new stuff.

So all new rangers DO NOT have limited slip as an option? meaning ALL new rangers have OPEN diffs if you turn traction control OFF???

I don't know if this includes the offroad package or if it is the best source but

2010 model is now devoid of any limited slip axle option at all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Ranger

For what it is worth the build and price thing on Fords website doesn't show it either.

Traction Control > Limited Slip anyway for a street driven truck.

Most offroaders would rather have a locker anyway, and there are more locker options available for less money for an open 8.8 than a L/S 8.8 anyway.

Typically however the system also depends on a "Fly by Wire" throttle system

My only real experience with ford's traction control was with
a Lincoln Mk8 That I got to spend a week with...

MY one issue with it was that if you needed to drive it in snow
or ICE the computer wuld pull so much throttle you couldn't
get it out of a parking spot.

I wound up driving around with the system manually turned
off most of the time, but it would automatically reset whenever
the key was cycled to off.

If I were GIVEN a vehicle with traction control I'd still add
a traction aiding differential to it.

If memory serves from when I was shopping, there are no L/S differentials listed on the 2010 order guide, either- so I don't think even the fleet trucks can be had with one.

*Traction control being added was a big, big reason I went with an '09, in fact. Didn't want that crap in my truck. Don't have it, either.

Don't get me wrong I'd like to have an active traction control,
but I don't consider it a substitute to a traction aiding differential

But it MUST be a system I can turn off manually.

I'm gonna be honest, my wife's 2000 passat has traction control and I always turn it off because firstly, I've been driving long enough that I don't necessarily like the vehicle compensating for conditions for me and second, it's a manual so it shudders like hell when it's braking wheels while I try to accelerate. Maybe it's exacerbated by the fact that its FWD so when they spin and the traction control kicks in, I'm trying to accelerate and its trying to prevent wheel spin AND those are the wheels I'm TRYING to steer with, plus with 4 wheel disc and a torquey 2.8, it just seems like the car is trying to do one thing when you want it to do another. Drives my wife nuts, but I always turn it off and I drive better with it off than she does with it on. Kinda makes me dread my next car down the road seeing as how tire pressure monitoring systems and traction control and stability control systems are getting as common as airbags.

I've started to notice new cars are becoming like when I was in highschool.

Compensating for the stupid people is making it that much worse for the rest of us.

I have driven exactly 1 traction controled vehicle. While I agree they are better for the vast majority of people.

I don't like it. I find that there is a delay in the system while it decides If there is actually slippage in a wheel.

My limited slip has Zero delay as its is locked 100% of the time until it needs to slip.

I Don't like the fly by wire style of gas pedals. I also notice a delay while they think about the acceleration.

Yea, my wifes passat has a noticeable delay if the cruise is on and I punch it to pass.... what was ever so wrong with a throttle cable? Think how many lives would have been saved if the people in their toyota's couldve just stuck their tow under the pedal and lifted up and it had DONE something?

I wrote that! And yes, sadly, its true. I first found out from ford's website, then i went down to the dealer where a buddy of mine told me theres not even a special order code for an LSD. Also, there is no longer an fx4 or fx4 level II trim level!
