2010 Ranger gets FACTORY rear disc brakes

It appears to be a rotated brake flange, according to the following Ford Tech Service pics. If this is true, these brakes WILL NOT bolt up to an 09 and older axle. Also appears to be a similar setup as the 95+ explorer's.

Once again, I'm going to plug 04 and older Cobra/GT/Stang brakes as being the best virtually bolt-on disc setup for 29 spline '09 and older axles.

Pulled from a similar thread over at Ranger-Forums...
Here you go. I assume the size is gigantic, but it's the best way so you can view it.

Hmmm it might bolt on still. The caliper would be on the top of the disc is all. Dodge has been mounting their calipers that way for years on the grand caravan.

Honestly, those look a lot like type s jag brakes thrown onto a solid rear end. I spent a few weeks messing with one of those stupid things this summer. Made noise, customer couldn't give me a good description of the concern (said during braking at parking lot speeds, really happened after braking at 35 and up) and in the end that car cost me my job. But thats the only place I've seen dampers like that before.

They might. but if they changed that, they may have possibly changed the flange bolt pattern too. Only way to know is pull the stuff off and measure I suppose.

I'm guessing not. The shape of the flange looks different (it looks more like the Explorer flange). Plus you'd also have to somehow move the bleeder fitting on the caliper so they will bleed properly like that.

Its basically a new axle. I had another one come in the other day and i had another look underneith. Theres also the addition of traction control. Which kind of goes hand in hand with the rear disc brakes. I wanted to get those exploded views up on here, but i wasn't sure if it would be frowned upon by ford to post up things from the service manuals we use at work.

I also determined that its a 2010 year model thing. No 2009s with the rear disc setup.

I never thought about checking the mustangs to see is they have the same brake setup in the back... if memory serves, dont they have an integrated parking brake in the caliper? I will look into it and find out.

I checked into the mustang brakes, they are different.

And the whole rear axle in the ranger is different. The tubes are not a uniform size the whole length, they bulge out, the flange is different. And im going to guess that they probably stuck the 31 splines in it. I cant gaurentee that tho.

As for the 2009 and newer rear brakes, whats wrong with the setup on the old crown vics? The flange will be the same and everything will bolt up. If i get some free time, I have a 92 crown rear axle and the rangers stock rear axle. I could try swaping things over to trial fit it.

well, if the brakes can't be swapped, would the entire rear axle be a direct swap? i don't the spring perches or shock mounts have changed in the last 26 years have they?

Can someone get better, clearer real pictures of the rear disc brakes? I want to update the Tech Library with the information posted here.

I agree with Alan, it took them long enough. I have been maybe in the market for a new small truck, this may be the reason I go buy a new Ranger.

The next one that comes in I can take pictures, i keep the digital camera in the Escape for "just in case" stuff. All i had on me at the time was the phone, didn't have time to get the camera.

Maybe if i get really bored I will bring a stock unit in and take pictures specifically for you.

Sweet, about time they did that. Drums are a pain in the dick, and I hate dick pain.
The second thing I noticed when I started getting Sport Tracs was how much better the brakes were. The first thing I noticed was how much better the seats were.

I was extremely impressed when I swapped the drum brakes for disc brakes on the Explorer 8.8 I had under the Bronco II. The braking was a bizillion times better after the swap then before. That is saying a lot since the Explorer 8.8 drums are much larger than the stock Bronco II 7.5 drums and braking was greatly improved when I put the drummed 8.8 in.

Now if only I could find a disc brake setup for my 8.8 f150 setup that looked stock!!

No kidding - night and day. Not to mention easier to work.

Swap in a 9" and do a disc conversion on that. It's really easy.
