Hi, guys. I have a 1992 Ranger at the moment and love it but I did stumble upon this guy at my local Ford dealership this week. They are asking a bit more then I think it's worth.
I bought my 1992 Ranger from them brand new in 1992 and was able to haggle almost $600 off asking price. I'm sure if I walked in with a cashiers check for say $15,800 it may float.
It has been 20 yrs since I have actually started to look around and wondered what you thought of this Ranger? Seem like ok truck?
Thanks

Part of it depends on where you are located. I sure wouldn't pay that for a 2wd truck, not up here, but if you are down south where 4x4 isn't as important, I suppose it's not that important.

Looks like a decent truck. I'd try for $15,800, but don't trade the 92. You will get a negligible amount for it, and regret it soon after. Just hang onto it for a beater truck.

Or sell it private party.

The last time I got a vehicle the dealer was going to give me $200 trade in... so I cleaned it up, stuck some signs in it and let it sit for 2 weeks and got $1200 for it.

My theory on vehicle replacement is that anything older than 10 years that still runs and drives and doesn't need a ton of money every year to get through inspection is more valuable to me as a vehicle in my possession than whatever money I might be able to get for it.

Same if I can't get at least 2 grand for it.

I learned that from my dad, and it is one of the reasons my truck didn't get traded in when he bought his 97.

Mine was a car and I needed a truck, I couldn't afford to maintain three vehicles nor did I have a place to keep them. It was a good car that needed some fairly minor work but it was 15 years old and had 170k miles, cars don't hold their value that well especially with that kind of milage.

The smart thing would have been to sell the ever problematic Ranger and keep the car but that is something learned by experiance. :icon_thumby:

go and look at the price they bought it for on the paper in the window and say u want that price, and just keep working at them and most of the time u will get it for that price, atleast my grandma always has but that woman can negotiate.

I have never seen a used car with the price the dealer paid for it on the window.

Also, what you are proposing is trying to get the dealer to take zero profit. Unless he finances it that probably won't fly.

2wd for that much, Eh? It might depend on the area as Adsm says. I do see 2010 4x4 Rangers for around $16-17k with low miles on them in the Tampa / Orlando area. If there is nothing wrong with your truck keep it for a second truck and buy a newer one. 08 Ranger for example with low milage.

If you are talking about the MSRP, I would say you are paying quite abit too much.

for new cars, research it and find what the dealer wholesale price is for that car with the options it has. offer the dealer no more than 200 dollars above wholesale+destination fees. with the dealer holdback, he will make a nice profit and you will get a decent price for the car.

Used cars...Unless the dealer is offering a great deal on the used car, I tend to shop private party. Most dealers slap at least 1500 over what they pay for the used car, and they don't do much to them other than clean them up a little and as soon as you drive it off the lot, if something goes wrong good luck on getting them to honor it. generally you can find one on craigslist/ local classifieds etc and talk to the owner face to face and most of the time they will be honest about what the car needs, and you don't get too many surprises. Look up the cars value on several sites: edmunds.com, kbb.com and there are a few more, but I can't think of them offhand. Don't pay more than private party value unless the car is exceptionally clean/ low mileage etc.

as for used cars, always test drive, and test drive for all types of driving, highway, city etc. also be sure to check whether or not the engine is warm before starting it, as cold start issues might not be noticed if it is already warmed up and ready to go.

Thats pretty big money for a 2 wheel drive. I know off hand a few places around me (Nova Scotia, Canada) that have 4wheel drive rangers for around that price. One of them being a Fx4 with 65 000km. And up here EVERYTHING is expensive lol

I agree, keep your old truck. Look up the value of the newer truck on kbb. You can always go up but you can`t come down. Low ball `em, if they`ve had it for awhile they`ll dicker with you. If you get a decent price on it, leave a deposit on it.....Then go get a cashiers check. Keep in mind Fords warranty is 3/36 bumper to bumper and 5/60 powertrain. That`s from the in service date.

I have never seen a used car with the price the dealer paid for it on the window.

Out here in California a lot of dealers would put a "retail code" on the front windshield to let there sales guys know what they paid for the vehicle.

Most retail used to use C H A R E L S T O N

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

So if they are asking 15,800 for this truck he is looking at say they paid 12,500 for it code would be CHENN.

So if you are talking to the guy and you say ill give you 14,000 they know they just made a profit and will make the deal especially if you want to finance to.

There are other codes out there mostly they were used 20-40 years ago but they are still used. Been in retail for 25 years and my dad was for 50.

That's not a bad deal for my area. I would still low ball them and see what they say. Play hard ball with them. Years ago I was looking at a Jeep and the used car dealer was asking 5k for it. I talked him into wholesaling it to me for $2500. i wanted it and he wanted it off his lot.

97rangerxlt i didnt look at the link i just assumed it was a brand new 2010 that they haven't sold yet cause we have some brand new 2010's that have only 100-200 miles on them just from test drives so i was thinkin it was new sorry about that, but yea op that price for a 2wd is to much around here i can go get the same truck right now from our dealership for 16,200 for a new one with like i said 100-200 and thats without working them down
