For anyone who's worked on a Fusion, how bad is it to replace an engine? I have a friend with one and one of the valves disintegrated, so he's looking at putting a salvaged engine in. The shop manual says the engine comes out the bottom, but that's difficult without a hoist. Can it come out the top? I wasn't able to find a ton of videos of it, but there are a few so it seems it might be possible. But has anyone here done it?

Im sure its possible to bring it out the top but its gonna be a bitch. If nothing else its gonna be almost impossible to get the motor apart from the trans

It drops out the bottom and is separated from the trans once it's out. I don't know if you could get it out from above but I suspect you'd damage something trying. It isn't a DIY friendly job. I'd do my own but there'd be bad language involved.

I don't know for sure on the 4 cylinder version, but I know on the 6 cylinder car there is not enough width in the car to separate the engine from the trans with it in the car. I expect the 4 cylinder is just as long, so don't think I would try that path. I've dropped subframes with engine/trans out the bottom of other vehicles with just jackstands holding up the body, so I would definitely go in that direction rather than trying to pull it from the top on the Fusion.

on one of my older Taurus' I used an engine hoist to lift the front of the body and left the subframe/engine/transaxle on the ground. well sort of on the ground,
it was actually resting on the legs of the hoist. that presented a bit of a challenge to drag it off the legs and out from under the suspended body.

plan ahead

Not joking, and not sure what it would cost....but it might he worth renting a forklift.

Thanks for the replies, I watched one of the videos where they took it out the top and it looks like a pain. Lots of stuff has to come off, basically a bare engine at that point to get it to come out. And it has to be separated from the trans, which looks like an endeavor in and of itself. Sounds like he has a neighbor with a hoist, it sounds like that would be the best route.
