200HP

@D4v1d
I was once in your shoes, well close. I was 22 and I wanted more from my 2.9l. Here is what I did and I will share which worked the best and least:
1) give it a complete fresh tune up (plugs [+ one heat range], wires [8mm silicone suppression core or larger], coil [hotter coil, like 45k V], air + fuel filters, all fluids); this will establish your engine's base performance (mpg) and potential identify any problems.
2) use all synthetic fluids, they hold up better to heat.
3) lose the crankshaft driven fan/clutch; this gave me nearly 5 mpg.
4) take a good look at your gear ratio and tire size combination.
5) pop off your valve covers, then remove, disassemble, fully clean and inspect your valve covers, rockers, rocker arms and pedestals.
- if serviceable, up drill your oil passages one machinist drill bit size, chamfer the new diameters and deburr all pieces. This increase your top end oiling and reduces it's weight (a little, unless you decide to balance out your rockers).
- this is also a good time to consider a perform valve job. Not the most expensive procedure if you can remove the parts yourself for your machinist. Depending of course on the condition of your engine and how long it's been since it was built/rebuilt.
6) remote oil filter and thermo switch controlled oil cooler.

depending on your budget and the condition of your exhaust, go-to a 2¼" single low restriction exhaust.

That's it, you are making more power but with a fresh tune up and that crank fan gone your engine has less to work against.

EDIT, none of these actions will not take your 2.9l to 200hp but it should be performing at it's near best if no issues. Unfortunately if you desire the 200hp+ 2.9l it will cost time and money but it will reward you with exactly what you stated that you desire and be WAY more fun to drive!!

The 4.0 is only 20hp up on a 2.9 (140hp vs 160hp).

It does have a decent amount more of torque though. (225 vs 170)

Either way, a B2 isnt meant to be a speed demon and with any of the factory V6's wont be.

remember..
those peaks are not the whole story.

the 1200 to 4500 curve has areas of 40 to 50 hp and 70 to 80ftlb across portions of it on a 2.9.

a stock b2 with a 2.9 is pretty good. with a 4.0 it is a monster back to back.

200 hp. just get a turbo.

I do still exist, yes, haha.

To weigh in on OP's question though, it is possible to gain some power with the 4.0 through some upgrades, there are a couple ways to get more power, being increasing airflow via a cam, headers, and head work, or forced induction.

Pre supercharger I was (and still am) running a set of headers into a free flowing exhaust, which slightly helped power but helped my mpg more, the power was adequate but I needed a bit more. The supercharger I added made quite a difference in the power department, didn't appreciably change my mpg, and the engine still runs into a wall at 5k rpm just like stock, haha. It still does truck things very well, I've put a bit of time into making sure it stays cool and I drive it daily unless there's snow on the ground. It wheels well and is a tractor at low rpm (full boost around 1500rpm).
So how much boost and hp does the supercharger add

Its about 5 to 6 psi depending on ambient temps, math told me it's around 40 hp and 80 ft-lb

I see holyford has already chimed in.. but for future reference.. figuring out how much boost will add how much HP is simple math

14.7psi will (close enough) double the power a motor makes naturally. 7.35 psi will add 50%. 22lbs would add 150%.. so on and so forth.
