My credo
If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Just bought 2009 Ranger XLT with extended cab. It has power locks and windows etc. Only given one ignition key and 2 door keys with it. Not sure if it has keyless entry system and don't know how to confirm. I tried turning key on and off 8 times ending in on and the locks did nothing. Tried this several times.

Where is the module and what should I look for.

I can have an external system installed inexpensively but if one is already present would prefer to use it.

Thanks for any help!!!

Go to a Ford Dealer with the VIN and get your trucks option list.

You should go to a locksmith and get 2 more PATS ignition keys made and added to your system, locksmith needs to hook up his computer with Ford Software to add keys to PCM(engine computer).
That way if you lose 1 you still have 2 more so you can add another PATS key yourself.

Or at the very least get a Cloned PATS key made, many locksmiths can do this as well.
Your current working key's PATS ID number is read using an RFID scanner, then that ID is loaded on to a writable RFID key, then key is cut for ignition.
It cost less but it can't be used to add other keys because as far as the PCM is concerned you just have the 1 key, same number = same key, you need 2 working keys(IDs) to add a 3rd.
But having a spare will save you hundreds in towing costs

Problem Solved

Sorry for urgent post yesterday. New and didn't completely understand how it works.

I was in junk yard, sitting in tight space in back of ranger XLT in Memphis in 95 degree weather looking for what I thought was module location while keeping my eye on a 4 ft chicken snake in the bed.

Have checked vin lookup and been advised that vehicle was shipped with keyless entry. Tried key turn 8 times and locks don't cycle so it may be gone or not hooked up. Was in junk yard trying to find jack and handle and do some scouting work to locate module before I tore into mine which is in very fine condition. My Power locks work fine.

Ordered complete set of factory manuals this am off EBAY. So will trouble shoot when they get here.

Also had additional key made by local locksmith and ordered one off net and programmed it. Now have 3 working ignition keys.

Local accessory shop here can install key-less entry system with 2 remotes for $125. Unless it is something simple to fix on OEM this is probably way to go.

Please consider this issue resolved - not sure how to mark is as such.

Thanks for the update :)

RAP (Remote Anti-Theft Personality) Module - The gismo that talks to the key fob and the cabin module (that locks and unlocks the doors) has probably failed.

They are not expensive, ebay; but, on the 09, I think it is behind the pass air bag. So it would have to come out to get to it.

hey, I hope you get this before you shell out for the shop to do it, but I saw in your post about turning the key on and off 8 times...

you need to turn it from run to accessory 8 OR 9 times. I went through the same with my explorer. Do it 8x from ON to ACC and if that doesn't do it, try 9x from ON to ACC. If THAT doesn't do it, then yes, there is a problem with the module.

PM sent with above content as well...

I am pretty sure almost every Ford built after 2005 has RKE.

The procedure you said you tried for entering the programming is incorrect.

You have to hit the unlock button before starting the 8 key cycles, and keep your foot away from the brake, or it kicks you out.
