so im having issues with my truck (2009 ford ranger 4l) not cranking over. little bakstory, i drove the truck down to work to grab some stuff on my day off. truck started quick as per usual. i shut it off, then started it again and drove down the road a bit, stopped at a buddies house shut it off then came back to it a while later.

now here is where my problems start. when i first jumped in it before i put the keys in the ignition there was a clicking noise that sounded kinda like a solenid clicking on and off. didnt think anything of it tried to start it and nothing, no crank (not even a click from the starter solenoid). but all the other acessories work lights, radio, everything else i can think of.

im not a mechanic by any means but if someone could lead me in the right direction to look at it would be awesome.

Welcome to TRS :)

Door open should cause Battery Saver Relay to "click", it is under the dash.

Does the Anti-Theft light come on, as normal, when you turn on the key?
I assume you would say if it was flashing rapidly
Unless bulb is burned out.

2009 has starter motor cutoff if Key doesn't pass PATS(anti-theft) test, only sign of this is rapidly flashing Theft Light, and of course no starter motor.

Here are the fuses to check
Engine fuse box
#7 30amp

Cab fuse box(passenger side kick panel)
#21 5amp

If you have an automatic, try starting engine in Neutral, there is a safety switch that prevents starter motor from working if transmission is not in Park or Neutral, if shift cable is not adjusted correctly(stretched) it can prevent switch from passing voltage to starter motor.
Steering column shift linkage can do the same if loose.

Manual transmission uses a Clutch pedal switch for the same thing

Always check battery cables, remove and clean both, Ground is just as important as "+" cable.

Dash lights only require a few amps, starter needs 75+ amps so bad battery cable can provide a few amps but not enough for starter motor

The "clicking" noise could also be a relay closing and opening because of low voltage/amps.

thanks a ton for the reply. the mechanic from the farm i work at today came down. we cleaned all the grounds and battery terminals, and checked for power at the starter with a test light but the signal? (small wire on the starter solenoid) didn't have power while cranking. turns out the aftermarket alarm is doing weird things so it's in valet mode now until he can deal with it on Saturday. in the mean time I'm back on the road and able to get to school tomorrow.

Good work :icon_thumby:

Thanks for updating the thread
