New to this site. Wanting to run this idea by some people more specific to the ranger. Considering gas prices and all I was thinking of convertin my new 4 banger to 4wd. Dana 30 front with TNT customs y-link, but will have to fab up mounts to frame & steering. Would like to use a small divorced t-case like a Toyota w/ott or even Samurai. Thoughts/suggestions?

Do a search. Alot of people have asked this question. I just dont like having to tell people that its usually not worth doing.

Welcome to the site!

I think the D30 would be OK on a 4cyl Ranger and no bigger than 33-35" tires.
I would prefer to use an actual Ranger t-case under there myself, except to do that, you'd have to either swap out or tear apart your brand new transmission to mate a 1354 t-case up to it (given those two options, I'd take it apart and swap a 4x4 tailhousing & mainshaft on it, as everything else in there is still new compared to an 11 year old junkyard 4cyl 4x4 manual (the last year it was offered). Of course you'll have no more warranty on it however.

A Samurai t-case isn't going to stand up to pushing the weight of a Ranger though, and I believe Toyotas are all married cases (both are passengerside drop as well (exc Tacomas), which eliminates being able to use the ubiquitous Chrysler Jeep D30s, and would probably require a bunch of exhaust work to clear the driveshaft as well).

if you intend to keep this rig for ahwile, i would just do it.

have the tranny converted and use an older manual t case unless a late one is cheap enough....then i would buy the new mopar axle.

since many can pull this off by themselves they would come out ahead.

otherwise your screwed for cost effectivness.

if i were to buy a current truck it would be a 2wd ext cab. then it would get the axle and t case it deserves from mopar. sure it would cost me 4 thousand dollars to do, but it would be the same as a sla turd cost wise, only lifted to my preferred ride height with a 4 spd case and a real axle.

now thats a winnie win win thar laddie.:icon_cheers:

Yeah I sorta over looked those two case being passenger drops. Being said I am not familar with the 1354 t-case? What years was it available too? And were they 4 banger based? Manual or electric shifted? I know it will cost me as much to build as buying a 6cyl 4x4 ifs, but I have owned many sami's and loved them except that they don't have a pickup box.

The 1354 is an RBV t-case. It started in 90 and is still used today I believe. The vast majority of them are electric, but if you get lucky you can find a manual shift. I've only seen a couple and one of them promptly found a home in my rig.

Trying to locate an XJ 30 front axle for my Ranger. Question is what year XJ if anyone knows had ABS and is it compatible? Do I even bother? If I chose not to run it can I turn the light off without at least losing the rear ABS?

4x4junkie is on point.

im doing the same swap on my xcab but i found a dana 44 out of a rubicon that im gonna use instead. i will be running y-links as well and i should be picking up the dana 44 this weekend.

this will be a crazy setup and flex like hell. i got a set of 9100 bilstein rockcrawler 12" coilovers that ive decided to use. so that leaves my coil buckets and springs just taking up space.

just to put u at ease with the dana 30... alot of jeep guys like to keep the dana 30 hp instead of swapping a dana 44 lp because the 44 is just not too much stronger.

i have some parts laying around so if your in need, just hit me up.

btw, whats your location?

btw, you will want a 96 to a 99 dana 30 from the xj. just make sure it does have the abs with larger u-joints or get some shafts out of a tj dana 30. they will swap right in.
