2008 FX4 Fuel Capacity

Well I wouldn't over fill the gas tank
On 1995 and up Rangers Ford moved the EVAP system to behind the gas tank, and included a container just for people that over fill the tank
Any fuel over the tanks capacity flows out thru the EVAP hose and into this container where it just sits and over time evaporates
So that Extra fuel you added, and PAID FOR just sits there for a few days and is gone
Some of its vapor is burned in the engine, but not really great for MPG :)

You may not have been talking about my few extra gallons mod, but I wanted to clarify. What I was talking about adding a few gallons to is a 2000 F-250 7.3L diesel and I don't think it has an EVAP canister. On the gas version (which does have EVAP) the filler/vent hose extends into the tank a bit to create a pocket at the top of the tank for fuel expansion. Apparently it's not needed for diesel, but the same tank and filler/vent hose is used. The Harpoon removes the extended potion of the hose allowing you to use that expasnsion area to fit 4-5 extra gallons. Honestly I'm not very likely to bother with that portion fo the mod, 26 gallons is enough for me. At almost 20 MPG I'll need a bathroom or leg stretch break before I have to worry about running out of gas.

The "check gage" light does not always come on with the same amount of fuel left in the tank. If I am driving stop and go, the light will come on sooner when you hit the brakes. If I am cruising on an Interstate or highway at a constant speed, it will some on later. Around town I know I have about 30 miles left when the light comes on. On an Interstate I know I better be getting gas before 20 miles. That is how mine works. Other model years may be different.

While towing on an Interstate, I have run out of fuel with barely over 15 miles after the light came on. Fortunately, I carry a couple gallons of extra fuel when I travel, so I was not stranded. Be careful about trusting how much fuel you have left after the light comes on. It can trick you.

No, the E on the gauge definitely means empty. If it meant low they would have put an L there. They actually put a low fuel warning light on newer vehicles (don't know about those Rangers) to warn when the fuel level is getting low bvecause people have a habit of ignoring their gauges. Will it keep running after hitting E, and is there some gas left in the tank? Sure, that's by design in most cases, but E on the gauge is what the OEM considers to be empty (at least with the original sender).

I am aware. My dad (the previous owner) also said that this happened to him before and there was a little rubber check valve on the sender that had come loose and was causing the issue. I'll get around to fixing it someday. Either fixing the check valve or doing the hutch & harpoon mods on the tank and sending unit. Hutch removes the in tank strainers and extends the pickup and return, harpoon modifies the vent in the filler neck allowing for a few extra gallons in the tank.

As long as I am aware of the problem, I can avoid driving below 1/4 tank and it isn't a pressing concern.
The E means it's close to empty, if it was actually empty your engine would quit running. Like I said it can show E when there is 3-4 gallons in there which obviously is not empty.

Did the hutch and harpoon mod on my 7.3 and I have put 40 gallons in it before.
