i just bought this truck, its an 07 with 100k miles. this is the 3rd 4.0l ranger 5 speed that ive owned and always had normal clutch pedal untill now. its not spongy, it just doesnt release untill the last inch or so of the pedal, i find myself slipping it sometimes cuz im waiting for it to release :annoyed: ...

the clutch does not slip at all. ive tried everything, going up hills in 4th and 5th gear, and no slipping.

so does this mean the clutch plate is wearing thin? or should the hydraulics make up for the wear? as far as i know it hasnt been replaced before, but if it has, is it possible it just needs bleed better??? any help would be appreciated! putting a clutch in would be no problem, i just hate to do it when it doesnt seem to need done!

An inch from the floor, or an inch from the top?

Hydraulic clutches when operating normally only engage and release in the top inch of pedal travel.

the old "Grabs right off the floor" saying applies to mechanically actuated clutches.

If you only need to push the pedal down about an inch or an inch and a quarter,
it's probably ok.

You should drive mine in dry weather my clutch grabs about 3/4" from the top in wet weather it's often difficult to tell when the clutch stops slipping and the tires start:)

Okay, I appreciate the input. Mine sounds just like yours, I really only have to push it down an inch or inch and a half when I come to a stop. It just messes with me sometimes! I've been driving manual transmissions all my life, and sometimes I find myself slipping and even stalling occasionally! Ha, makes me feel like a beginner again!

You shoulda seen my father back ~1980 trying to deal with the clutch in New Saab

My father grew up on Studebakers and later british Sunbeams thought the clutch was supposed to grab right off the floor...

My saab was much "worse", in his opinion, after I switched in the Kevlar
AP-Lockheed Racing clutch... it did it's entire slip range between "off" and "on"
took place in about ~1/8" of pedal travel... when cold, when the disc was up to temperature it was much worse.
