Just bought my 2006 last week. 4L supercab with 4wd. 28K miles. Everything was running fine. A few days ago I was going around 5 mph and switched knob to 4x4H and nothing happened. Got home, started it later while in Park and it went into 4H and 4L, no problem. Tested it a few times after that and no problems. Yesterday,(of course when the roads were icy), went to put it in 4H and nothing! No dash light, no noise, no 4wd. When it starts the 4x4 and 4x4 Low dash lights do light up like normal and then go out. No flashing or anything like that. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Tom

After looking through the info., I tried the "hit the motor with a hammer" tip and sure enough, I was able to shift in and out of 4wd. Half hour later, wouldn't work again so hit with hammer again, it worked. Now I know its a bad transfer case motor. I've never changed one before and was wondering if there are any tips or advice on how to change it. I couldn't find anything on this site. Thanks again.

Look here: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/TCaseshiftmotor.shtml

You can usually clean the internal contacts, and it'll work fine again. I fixed mine about 8 yrs ago, and it's still going strong. BTW, after you reinstall it, you should exercise it once per month, to prevent it seizing up again. I do that every time it rains, whether I need 4x4 mode, or not.

Thanks for the advice. I'll be taking the motor off soon.

????

My '06 has just under 26k miles and my 4wd stopped working late last year. The fuses seem to be good and the 4wd lamps flash after the key is released so I assume the 4wd module is good, just nothing happens when I turn the switch.

Hoping to find someone who experienced the same situation and what their solution was.

clean the shift motor armature with fine sand paper I used 600 grit, the black on my armature didn't look that bad, but I cleaned it and it's been working ever since, mine was on my 89 b II, seems to be a common issue.

Turns out the 4WD transfer case selector motor was the culprit. Local garage rebuilt the motor for $60 and everything is working fine at the moment. Was told to turn on the 4WD system on a regular basis to keep everything up and running. Prices for a new motor ranged between $122 (partsgeek.com) and $400 (local dealer). :()
