2005 Ranger PATS

Most of you know I got an '05 Ranger this past weekend. When I got it, it had an aftermarket Viper remote start and keyless entry system.

I thought the keys should have be the PATS style keys. However, I have the older style key (2 of them).

This is what keys I have for my Ranger:

Isn't this the key I should have:

I am wanting to take the remote start off, if I do, will I have a problem with my keys?

i have an 03 and i have the second style ket to mine so i would think you should have the same i know mine has a computer chip in it

I don't think the keys I have have the PATS chip in them.

I am worried that if I have the Viper remote start removed, it will not start with the keys I have.

in my 05 i have the first type of key posted, and have no issues with the truck.

PATS is not a standard feature on the 05. It wasn't even a standard feature on the Taurus until 09, and the sedans and SUVs get the fancy options way before the pickups.

In 05 it was an option, and if your truck starts with the first style of key there, you don't have it. Unless a PO pulled an Enterprise.

You just don't have PATS. If you did, your Viper system would not make it start with the non-PATS key.

IMO, ditch the Viper. I've seen them cause more problems with starting and power locks than I care to count. If they are properly installed they work fine, but they usually don't last nearly as long as the rest of the vehicle and then when they do fail it can keep the vehicle from starting.

Ditch it.

Old thread, but wanted to post some info. I recently got a 2005 Ranger Edge 3.0 that only had 1 key. Called the Ford Dealership and then wanted $60 for the key and $60 to program. Seemed like the only option. I read a few threads on TRS that said the 2005 didn't have PATS, so I called the dealer to query about this - the guy said my truck had the PATS (his tone was like: "Of course it does, are you gonna take the Internet over me?"). So, today my son goes into the dealership (a different dealership that's closer to home, but quoted him $65-$75 for key and $65 for programming - guy cuts the key and charges him $39.95 and says there's no PATS system in the truck, so there's no programming required.

He said if he hadn't waited 1 1/2 hours to get the key cut at the dealership he would have told them to stuff it since he can get a key off the Internet (cut) for less than $25 (Wolf Security from eBay will cut the key from a hi-res photo - we ordered a 3rd key from him - $25 including shipping and cutting the key).

Local auto store (Canadian Tire) refused to cut a key, even though my son told them it was just for the door, in case he locked the keys in the truck - they said for liability reasons (what liability???) they wouldn't cut it because their machine sensed there was a transponder in the key.

So, it seems even though they didn't put PATS in the 2005 Ranger, the keys still have the transponders in them...

Anyways, just more support for good information off TRS.

As has been said in this thread and many others. In 2005 PATS was an OPTION. An OPTION, that means some had it, some didn't.

Some places will not cut chipped keys without proof of ownership because some local laws will consider them an accessory if that key is used to steal the vehicle. Stupid I know, but everywhere has at least one retarded law.
