I am going nuts! I'm trying to research exactly what I need for a V8 conversion for a 2005 4x4 Ranger. I'll buy whatever year model Explorer parts I need, but the thing I keep running into is that 99-01 V8 Explorers are the best candidates for 2001-up Rangers for electronics and especially PATS compatibility.

EXCEPT...

2005 Rangers don't have PATS!

So, does that mean that I need to treat my truck as if it's a 98 or older that didn't have PATS also? Or, is my truck some weird "frankentruck" combination of pre-PATS/post-PATS electronics that won't work with anything?

I am so confused! Please help! :bawling:

If you don't have that option, don't worry about it.

Use or delete it from the new setup as necessary.

I've been thinking the same thing. For some reason unknown, the '05' does not have the PATs. Thinking without any knowlege that you could use the '97' Explorer computer and wiring. Sure there might be a lot more involved in the wiring, ABS or something like that. I wouldn't worry about the mechanical things too much. Sure Bob R. or one of the real experts will jump in and help.

Why?

why would u even want to do this swap?? the 4.0L sohc is pretty comparable to the 5.0L exploder motor, ive driven the 5.0L and its faster, but for your late model ranger, i dont really think its worth it IMO. cheers

So our 05 Rangers don't have PATS???? Sounds sweet to me! So does this mean we can swap in any explorer 5.0 motor? How would we deal with the PATS on the explorer?:icon_confused: I hope some more light is shed on this topic!

To qoute Jranger86 "Why would you want to do this?" Because I/we can and want to! Thinking it may not be that hard after all. Got both the wiring diagrams and will sit down this Winter and look at them.

Option 1:
Install the PATS Module and PATS tranceiver from a 99~2001 Explorer and wire them to the matching 5.0L Explorer PCM. I did this on my swap because the Explorer used type B PATS and it was not compatible with the 2003 Ranger type E PATS system.

Option 2:
Find out if you can have PATS turned off in software by using a custom calibration (AKA "tune") in the Ex PCM. This should be possible.

Option 3:
Use the engine/trans/PCM/harness from a 96~97 Explorer which also did not have PATS. This would require converting the Ranger fuel system from returnless fuel to return fuel.

Thanks Bob, you always the one who really knows the late swaps, the ins and outs.
