I was wondering if anyone knew the OBD II Protocol on a 2004 Ford Ranger 4.0 xl fleet

J1850 PWM & ISO 15765 CAN.

Yes, just depends what data you are accessing. Some info comes through the can network protocol, some through j1850. 2004 was the first year they started using CAN so its not fully integrated.

My 2004 Ranger (4.0L 4WD) has 6 modules, each of which speaks 1 of these 3 protocols:
  • SAE J1850 PWM
  • ISO 9141-2
  • 11-bit High-Speed (HS) CAN (aka ISO 15765-4, 11 bits, 500 Kbps)
The PCM uses PWM.

The ABS, 4x4, RCM (seatbelts/airbags), and GEM (wipers, lights, etc) all use ISO 9141-2.

The IC (Instrument Cluster) uses CAN.

I suspect that any 2004 Ranger would be similar (except for the lack of the 4x4 module on non-4WD models).

The protocol used depends on which module you're accessing.
