I looked at a 2003 Ranger today and I'm not sure if it's a factory level II or a if it's just made to appear as one. It has the front skid plate, level II interior, Alcoa rims and level II stickers. Can I tell from the VIN number if it's a true level II?

it has manual transfer case?? and chrome gear shifter?? if yes its an FX4 II
run the VIN to clear doubts

IF it's a manual transmission it will have a manual transfercase. IF it's an automatic it will have an automatic transfercase.

oo i thought they were only manual...
hey!! her's carfax tom!!! ask him the favor on the VIN:D

What makes you think it isn't a "true FX4"

Aside from the shocks (that may be shot by now anyway) skidplates, decals, interior and the optional Torsen limited slip they are about the same as any other Ranger.

what color are the seats... should be a two panel with two separate fabrics. should have a 8.8 under it and three skid plates, front, t-case, gastank. bilstiens.. u got the rest already..

Another thing to look for is the stainless steel front tow hooks. They could be added but I think it requires some slight modification to do it.

If it has all the FX4 LII stuff on it, it is probably an FX4 LII. I don't know why anyone would go to the expense to make it a FX4 LII when you can buy them with the stuff already on it for less. Even if they did do all the upgrades, it would basically be a FX4 LII, just not one built by the Ford factory.

BLACK flares and BLACK valence too. Valence would have special cutouts for the 'knuckle' style stainless towhooks too. BLACK interior w/ BLACK carpet is a HUGE dead giveaway to it being a level 2. BLACK w/ blue or red insert seats.

There's no way to determine if it's a true LII by the vin #.

My 2001 is now just like a 2003 Fx4 Level II....just ordered my stickers for it too. lol.

You could also get the manual transfer case in the Level II's with an automatic transmission through the '03 year.

I have seen them. It might have been a regular Level II, but you could get them.

Still a big fat nope. lol. Manual Tcase only came on Manual trans equipped 2002 FX4 Off Road and 2003 Fx4 Level II's. Automatic trucks still have the on-the-fly switch on the radio bezel. Tom is totally right. You may be mistaken/confused by one of the many tcase swaps people have done out there...idk.

Now...older models(97 and older, also not Fx4's as those start in '02), yes, column shift autos w/ floor shift manual tcases are out there.

What do you mean by a regular Level II? There is only one kind of Level II that I know of and the manual transfer case came only with the manual transmission in 02 and 03. The manual transfer case was not available after that. There were manual transfer cases available in earlier Rangers and I think that is 97 and prior.

I ment to say regular FX4.

Regular 03+ FX4's never had a manual transfer case at all.
