I'm considering renting a U-Haul trailor to move my son from one state to another but I've never pulled anything with my Ranger before so I have some questions. How much weight can I pull comfortably (including the trailor and possessions) with my Ranger and how does one go about figuring out how big a trailor you need not knowing what your possessions will weight until their actually loaded? Thanks!

Good luck in renting a trailer from u-haul, they're not happy about attaching anything to a ford truck. I had to borrow my sons jeep the last time I needed a trailer from them.

If your ranger came with a class 3 receiver like mine, look on it there is a sticker saying how much you can tow. If my memory serves me correctly, i think it's 3000 pounds top.

The only figures that list any weight on the door panel is Front GAWR 2850 and Rear GAWR 2600 is this the weight my pickup can tow? Is there any formula in deciding how big a trailor with a load I can use?

I wouldn't necessarily rent a U-Hual just used that as a reference. My thinking of using my Ranger for hauling is it a practical thing to try to do or are they really not made for hauling trailors, etc.?

What do you wanna tow? If it's only his bed and sutch, it will be a piece of cake. I towed around 1200 pounds with my 94 and she took it like a champ. That was in the bed though.

my 07 FX4 Level II with a class 3 tow bar... is said to pull (i think) 7,000lb... but I would never pull that much.. the ranger cant control that much weight

I think the max for a Ranger is in the 5000-5500 lb range, I tow 7000 with my F-150 and while it does pretty good there is no way I would try it with a Ranger.

Well I bought this used a few months ago but it did come with a tow package, it has a ball hitch on the bumper but also a tow hitch underneath it attached to the frame. I would be moving things like a recliner, end tables, treadmill, stereo gear, stereo cabinet, clothes, etc. but not exactly sure at this point in time how much more furniture.

5600lbs is the max trailer load for the new rangers,that's for the Super Cab. If you have a regular cab it's only 40lbs more. Those specs are with the 4.0L SOHC engine and the automatic transmission, with 4.10gears in the axles. These specs are straight from the Ford spec sheet for the Ranger. You can find it at the Ford website under the Ranger section.

Yes mine is a Super Cab, with 4.10 gear ratio and it has the 4.L Automatic so can I assume then that I can pull a total weight of 5600lbs with not much trouble?

I just towed a 6x12' UHaul 900 miles with my Ranger 4.0. It did fine. I just turned off the O/D on my automatic transmission.

Most of the tandem axle trailers have surge brakes to help slow your rig down.

You'll be fine.


BTW- I towed that trailer from northwest Kansas to south Texas.

Yes according to Ford your truck will be able to handle that much weight.
