Hi,

I have a 2002 3.0L Ranger. About a month ago it began having trouble starting. I would turn the key and it would take a second to turn over. The problem kept getting worse...ie..it took longer and longer to start. About two weeks ago it stopped starting all together....for the most part anyway. I took it to a shop and they replaced the CPP and the Master cylinder. They said the cylinder leaked and this made the switch go bad. I took it home, parked it, came back five minutes later and tried to start it. It didn't start. I took it back. They said the starter soleniod was bad. So they replaced it. Once again, I took the car home and parked it. It started a few times and then just as last time....it quit working. Any ideas? I'm tired of paying people to try things. The battery is fine. When I turn the key there is no noise. No clicking. Nothing. The power comes on. The radio, lights, everything works. The truck just will not start. I thought it could be the distributor cap.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Mike

Your truck doesn't have a distributor cap, but that wouldn't cause this problem anyway. So you're saying that when you turn the key there's no cranking or anything from the motor? All the lights and such come on but nothing when you turn the key? Sounds like the starter itself is going bad.

Shouldn't the mechanic have been able to recognize that and advised me to put a starter in rather than just replace the solenoid?

Could old or bad spark plug wires have anything to do with this?

crawl under truck and tapp on the side of the starter if that dosen t work take the starter to a local auot part store and have them test the starter.

oh and some mechanics are tryin gto rip you a hole so they can be paid. I use to work in shops and there is alot of scandilous stuff that goes on

yeah...i've had my fair share of shady mechanics. I took it to a ford dealership because I figured they would at least diagnose the problem correctly and solve it.

Apparently, paying top dollar doesn't buy you anything...least of all peace of mind.

Thanks for the help. I'll give the started a tap and see what happens.

Should he have? Yes. Did he? Probably not. These guys make their money by taking advantage of people and making them come back. Also a starter and solenoid usually get replaced as a single piece, so they can charge for that too.

does the motor carnk over when you try to start it ?
I am little confused by what your saying.

oh and one l;ast thing as i walked back by this thread if the starter is good check all of your cables. Sometimes if you haev a bumbed or loose ground cable it wont start. Use jumper cable to ground the block or intake manifold to the negative terminal on the batt. Also you can jump the solenoid (sometimes new parts can be defective)

bashing dealership mechanic s is a good way not to get your car fixed. there are hacks everywhere. have a conversation with the guy working on your car and maybe you could find out if he seems trustworthy. trust is everything in my profession, and i can't stand teh dealership stereotpe i keep reading on these message boards. if you can't find a mechanic you can trust, your screwed!

you have power inside the vehicle ie, lights radio... but no click or anything when you turn the key? get the clean your posts and terminals on your battery, have the battery checked, and check the relays.... if the battery is good, you should at least hear a click... it starts fine after driving it then the next day wont even click leads me to beleive the battery is no good. It takes a good amount of power to get the motor tuning sometimes.
