I have a 1991 Ranger with a 3.0 V6 that needs work and happen to have available to me a 2002 Ranger engine 3.0 V6 that is in very good shape.

My 91 of course has a distributor and the 2002 does not. What would be needed to swap the 2002 3.0 V6 into my 91 3.0 V6 or should it even be done?

Thank You. :)

You might want to double check crankshaft could have two different size pilot holes.

But if it works everything from your 91 will need to be on the 02 motor.
The 02 motor will just be a long block really before you put all the other stuff on it .
But double check the crankshaft pilot hole to see if it's right.

Thank You for the reply. The 3.0 that is in the 2002 ranger is an automatic where as my 1991 is a standard?

I figured I could only use the long block pretty much but will the distributor and so forth go into the 2002 3.0 ?

Or in the end am I just better off redoing the engine in the 1991 3.0 V6 that is currently in the truck?

The only reason I am thinking of doing the swap is that I can pick up the 2002 Ranger 3.0 engine on the cheap as the truck was totaled but the engine has very low miles.

Again Thank You for any help on this dilemma.

Yes it helps greatly. Thank You.

But one more question do I need to change the distributor drive gear?

that appears to be a yes, change the gear.
the cam and gear on the 91 should be cast.
the 02 should be a billet steel cam, with a steel distributor gear.
a cast gear won't work on a steel cam.

'ya might want to check with a cam manufacturer for a definitive answer.

I have a 93 and swapped in one from an 01 mine was a standard and the other an automatic I ended up being able to use the 01 lower intake manifold but had to use the old upper as far as electronics I use the 93s and I kept the balancer from the 01 on the engine there are timing marks on the balancer they are just hard to see but everything worked out great motor runs like a champ I burnt up an exhaust valve on the 93 and that's when I decided to go for the motor swap good luck
