hey guys, i'm new here, just trying to figure out where to start with my v8 conversion. i have a 2002 regular cab ford ranger. it has a 5-speed manual transmission and a 2.3 liter engine. it is also a 2wd. i want to put a 5 liter in it and would like an automatic transmission to go with it. i read the article here on the 5.0 liter conversion once but still have some questions. i was thinking of picking up a used explorer and taking all the parts i need. so, what year explorer would i need? i thought at first it should be at least a 1998 explorer but after i read that the 4-cylinder 2.3 liter ranger doesnt have PATS i then wondered if a 1996 explorer might work. it would be easier to go with the 1996 or 1997 and not have to deal with PATS if that is correct? also, does the transmision that comes in the explorer work in my truck? and what about the rear end of the explorer? can i replace mine with the explorers? i think the rear end in my 2.3 liter is not strong enough. anyhow, thanks for any and all responses. i havent worked on a vehicle in years, although i once was good with the wrench but now with all the computer stuff it gets a little tricky. i'm sure i'll have more questions but for now thats good.
thanks

Thank-you. Thats what I figured but just needed to hear it from someone who knew. Ive scince done some investigative work here where I live (British Columbia, Canada) in regards to air-care testing and have found out that it is illegal to install an engine older than the vehicle year. Since the 302 was discontinued in 2001 I guess legally I cant put a 302 in my ranger. Guess I'll be researching the 4.6 swap:( It'll have to be at least a 2002 4.6 with all the emmission equipment and pass air-care testing for the 2002 year. I dont want to do all the work and not be able to drive it.

Man, I love Montana, we have absolutely no emissions tests to pass!

hmm. definatly would do a ls or hemi over a 4.6.

now a 5.4 out of a navigator on the otherhand, thats a good way to go ford.
