I know these motors are prone to timing chain issues and I'm about to swap one in my 2000 Ranger because it has low miles and i got a deal on it. I'm going over general maintenance before i begin the swap, but what timing chain kit do i need to resolve the possible future issue? If i understand correctly its the left tensioner that tends to fail so is there just a kit that fixes that? Looking on Google there are many different kits, some with more parts than others but the prices vary much too. I'm just looking for a fix kit, not an OEM replacement for the faulty ones.

the reason its such a big deal is the motor has to be pulled to fix the chains, seeing as theres on in front of the engine and at the back. no point in replacing one but not the other. you would just run into the same problem again very quickly. if the truck isnt making a rattling noise, theres nothing you need to worry about.

The engine is sitting in my garage so i can replace the parts easily right now. But I'm curious which kit i need because I've seen different onea

id say get it from the dealer, i believe they corrected the issue later on in the engine and they now have the fix kit, i could be wrong though.

As I understand it the Motorcraft part has been revised and is the fix.

The job is somewhat difficult as the cams jump when you release the cogs. If you don't have the holding tools I'd try to get a set.

I'll need to shop around. I got to go to Ford tomorrow anyways so I'll run by parts to get an estimate

Check ebay for tool numbers 303-578 and 303-564. Those are the cam holding tools. They will help immensely in getting the cam timing right.

Just left Ford. Ordered the replacement parts kit and they had a package deal on all the special tools required.
