Two wheel drive automaticWelcome to TRS
Please elaborate.............................
You posted in the V8 forum, so did you swap a V8 into your 2001 Ranger?
If so what year V8 and what year V8 computer?
Did you swap out the whole instrument cluster or just the speedometer, and what year vehicle was speedometer from?
In 2001 Rangers the speedometer signal comes from the engine computer(PCM)
Was original speedometer not working?
If so the problem may not have been speedometer, but wiring or PCM signal
And manual or automatic transmission?
And 2WD or 4x4?
Entire drive train was pulled from a 2000 Ford Explorer motor transmission engine wiring harness PCM PCM has had access to deletedTwo wheel drive automatic
Entire drive train was pulled from a 2000 Ford Explorer motor transmission engine wiring harness PCM PCM has had Pats system deleted
The ranger has a sensor on the rear end but the thing is when I put my scanner on it and view data I can see vehicle speed so iam stumped. U are correct trans does hang up and shift ruffPATS wasn't in the Cluster until 2004 and up, but yes, good to delete it for the swap
Speedometer signal is not connected because 2001 PCM was removed and replaced by the 2000 PCM
I bet automatic transmission shifts harshly or hangs a bit, because it also doesn't have a speed signal
Does your 2001 2WD Ranger have 4 wheel anti-lock brakes(4WABS)?
If it does you can use it's module for the speed signal, 2000 Explorer did
If 2001 doesn't have 4WABS then you will need to buy a Speed Interface device
Like the SGI-5E seen here: http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=126/prd126.htm
This device will be hooked up the the rear axle speed sensor, the Signal IN, spliced into sensors 2 wires
Then the Output will be connected to the Grey/black wire on pin 1 on center connector of cluster, speed signal
Also the Grey/black wire on pin 58 of the PCM, speed in for shifting trans
Also to the Grey/black wire on Cruise Control module, if you have cruise control
The rear axle sensor(VSS) sends our 20,000PPM(pulse per mile), the speedometer and PCM are calibrated for 8,000PPM
So the interface device is needed to convert this signal
In 2001 Rangers, the PCM used a sensor on the transmission, OSS, to get speed signal and then PCM converted it to 8,000PPM and sent it out to speedometer
In 2000 Explorer the 4WABS module used rear axle sensor and then converted its 20,000PPM to 8,000PPM and sent it out to speedometer and PCM, and Cruise
hruffhow would u determine 2 or 4wabsThe ranger has a sensor on the rear end but the thing is when I put my scanner on it and view data I can see vehicle speed so iam stumped. U are correct trans does hang up and shift ruff

Drivers side, you can see Master cylinder at the right of picture
Unit has 5 brake lines attached, easy to see if you have it
So you can see the Speed on an OBD2 Reader in Live Data mode?
Look on the Driver's door Label, back edge of door
What is a Manufacture date?
1998-2000 Rangers did use rear axle sensor to the GEM module(behind radio) to convert the speed signal to 8,000PPM but that ended in 2001, so its possible you have 2000 wiring(and 2000 GEM) in your 2001.........if it was an early build date?
2001 GEM module doesn't have that function
But other issue is that the OBD2 reader looks at computer(PCM) data, so if you see speed then PCM should have the speed signal and transmission would shift OK
So......................odd
Thank u I will have to get back with u on itNo chance for GEM speed signal then

You see the brake lines and at the bottom of picture is the ABS Module, to the right is the ABS wiring connector
Pin 19 should be a grey/black wire, you will need to check if it is there, it wasn't needed in 2001 so may not be there, but the speed signal will be
