I just replaced a thermostat in a 2001 ford ranger and the check engine light comes on, when it is reset it goes out, if you shut off the engine and restart the light comes back on, does anyone know what the problem is ?

Get a code and come back with it. On a vehicle that new there can be literally 1000 things that can cause that.

im getting the same code out of mine as well.
also had the return hose plastic "t" fitting disintegrate in my hands.
i hate plastic parts -_-

from my bit of searching on this code first thing i would look at is make sure the pins for the sensor are not corroded, possibly grease them to keep moisture out.
the next thing ive learned is that it throws the code if the motor doesnt reach operating temp soon enough or if the thermostat fails and stays open the computer will throw the code.

feel free to correct me if im wrong and please add on to this if you know more.ive been roll'n dirty with my light on for quite some time now -_-
