I have a 2001 Ranger XLT regular cab with a 2.3L 4 cyl. I am interested in converting to a V8. Has anyone done this to a 2001 ranger yet and what is the best engine, tranny, and doner vehicle?

there are several ways to skin this cat.best doner with least wiring mods a 96-97 explorer, and a 2wd 4r70w trans.newer 98-01 explorer will require a pats install, not impossible, and homemade motor plates.if you find a 2wd explorer/mountineer you got the trans too.if not 3.8 stang 4r70w trans are plentyfull.find a donor, get helms evtm for 01 ranger and whatever year donor you get.bolt it all in wire up and go.easy swap

Use a 98-up Explorer/Mountaineer with a 5.0 as a donor and everything bolts right in. The wiring plugs in as well.

Thanks guys. My truck is a 2WD manual, are there any Explore/Mountaineers that are manual?

If there were, they'd be rare. Most of these were more luxury oriented vehicles with automatic transmissions.

No V-8 Explorers with manuals made, have to use the Mustang manual drive train.

Does this mean that the 4 cylinder pcm works with the 5.0? :icon_confused: I have an 01 with a 2.5 auto. Thanks and :sorrysign: sorry to revive an old thread.

No, you would have to use the V8 pcm. I think he meant the cab and other electrical wiring. All 5.0 Explorer/Mountaineers were AWD, so you'd either need a Mustang tranny or somehow get the t-case off the stocker if that's possible, I don't know. Main problem would be emissions testing if you have to do that where you live. Newer engine in older body is normally okay but they don't like older engines in newer bodies 'cause it looks like you're trying to get around the test. Where I live, as long as it passes the test they really don't care what you do.
