I have a 2000 Ranger with a blown motor, I want to know how interchangeable would the power train from a 2001 Ranger be. Both trucks are 4.0's. And are identical in all other respects, even down to color and interiors, not that the latter makes any difference. I can pick up the 2001 for $1100, and am considering doing so if the engines are a.direct swap.

The trans and motor mounts will bolt up, but the engines are not related except for that.
1990-2000 Rangers used the 4.0l OHV engine, 160HP
2001-2012 Rangers used the 4.0l SOHC engine, 207HP

So you will also need to change the Computer and engine wiring harness.
And the 2001 4.0l SOHC will need the timing chain kit installed, unless it has been done already, also a new knock sensor(under intake) and thermostat housing, these were all issues for the SOHC, pre-2005

IMO (and we all have one) too much work for very little gain. Find a 4.0 OHV engine and be happy. You may have to use your accessories to make it work; but, that should be easy.
