2000 Ranger - PCV valve grommet

Hi all, I have a basic question.

I want to replace the PCV valve and I understand that it's a good idea to also replace the grommet that it fits into on the valve cover.

I see a set of FEL-PRO valve cover grommets at the RockAuto parts online catalog. Is that the right thing to use? The reason I'm unsure is that they come in a set of 8.

Unless the the grommet shows any gaps between the PVC valve and the grommet, or any obvious signs of cracking and deteriorating, then I wouldn't even bother replacing it.

I'm having a hard time evaluating the condition of the valve and elbow because the freaking PCV valve is at the back of the valve cover between the engine and the dash and my big hands can't easily get in there to pull it out of the cover. Any tips on how to get in there without breaking anything else?

I've also got a '00 3.0 and there's no easy way to do it. Do you have any friends with skinny arms?

If you keep your oil changed on a regular basis then the valve most likely isn't plugged, so if you can't get it out I don't think that it's going to hurt anything to just leave it be. Does your truck idle and run OK? If it does then the valve is probably just fine, and the next time you take your truck into the dealer for service you could have them replace the valve for you.

Evidently the oil pan gasket blew out at some point, and a mechanic noticed it two weeks ago and said it was mostly due to a clogged PCV valve. I should have just let him change it, but I thought I could do itself since it is so easy oh well...

I could be wrong, but oil pan gaskets usually aren't all that delicate where a plugged PVC would blow them out - I would suspect that your pan gasket was leaking due to the pan bolts having loosened up.
