i got a 2000 ford ranger 4x4 i did the explorer 5.0 swap from a 1998 explorer that i been haveing problems with and now that its not my DD i want to put a carb on it what would i have to do to swap it from efi to carb? im wanting to do this real soon so any help would be nice thanks

No need to swap heads.

You'll need intake and carb of course, and an ignition system.
If you are using the Explorer 4r70w auto trans, you will either need a controller for it, or a different trans.

Mike I may doing the opposite of you. Pm me if ur interested I have stealth intake. holley 600. Msd pro billet distrib. And a Carter inline low pressure pump. All working in my setup now. Maybe interested and selling and getting a couple parts off of yours if your interested. Only thing u would have Tp complete is plug wires, gaskets, and a ignition box.

so if i was to take the intakes off put carb on it and drop a dist. with a steel gear in it it would run? what abought the chargeing system could i leave the computer and everything in it so the guages and everything would still work???

The gauges are totally independent of the ECU. The computer controls nothing except the engine, so you can get rid of it. As mentioned, the 4r70w is an electronically controlled trans, so it will not work without the ECU. But any manual or AOD/C4/C6 etc. will work fine.
Charging system is separate, too.

ok thanks i know the trans wont work i just wanted to make sure everything elce would work. now what if i put the carb on it and left the computer hooked up could i use this trans?

Could I put a carb on it.with a 1 wire dist and hook stock tach up and put tps on the carb and have the tranny shift?

no on the 70w. you can piggy back the controller to a point in the earlier years running different eecs together etc...but with a carb setup not so easy.

but its not ideal in any case.

what issues are you having....?

i should not say flat no on the tranny...theres potential, but using what you have may not be possible because what you have needs to be fixed...and fixing it would negate the need for a carb swap....

am i rambling again?

i will be home in a week...if i can i will try to give you some time between detroit and houghton lake trips.

It hasent ran right sence the day I did the swap runs ritch don't have any power and don't like to idle I gave up on it got a new 07 f150 the rangers now my weekend wheeler that is why I want to carb it easer to work on and easy to fix on the trail I just wish there was a way to keep this tranny with a carb becouse I just built this tranny when I did the swap and its a stout trans. And there's no way I can afford a optishift and stuff like that
