ive got a melted section of wires in my engine wire harness. its in a spot where alot of different wires are routed together, mechanic has told me its unrepairable and i need a new complete one. getting a new one from ford doesnt seem to be a real option, crazy expensive, so im seeking a used harness or someone parting out the same truck. its a 2000 ford ranger, rear wheel drive, 5 speed manual transmission, 2.5L, 4 cylinder, with manual windows and ac. Regualr cab, long bed(7ft). im also looking to find out which of these specifics matter. i know it needs the same drive train and engine, but cab/bed size, ac, power/crank windows im wondering if they are interchangeable. id take one without ac if it just meant the ac wouldnt be hooked up. also wondering about interchangeable years. ive been told after 2000 they changed the engine, so im wondering if a 99 would fit. any advice or info is a huge help thanks!

The best thing to do is take real good photos of the wires and where they run to and from and then go to a scrape yard and show the photos to them. They may have a harness for you. One thing that is important....what caused the wires to melt?? Buy a complete manual for your truck so you can maintain it.

An EVTM is a Shop manual that includes details about all electrical circuits, wiring and connectors.
EVTM = Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual

Google: EVTM 2000 ford ranger

They are manufacturer specific(Ford), year specific(2000), model specific(Ranger), some can be engine specific as well but most include all engine options available in that model year, just separate sections for each engine.
The cost may be worthwhile in your situation since it could detail just a section of harness needs to be swapped, not all the engine harnesses

With an engine harness, the only descriptors that matter are the year, engine, and maybe transmission type. The cab/bed configuration and trim level, options, etc don't matter unless it's the body or dash harness that is damaged.

Finding a used harness in a junkyard, or EBay shouldn't be too hard, and will be much cheaper than one from Ford.

Ford used the 2.5L Lima 4 cylinder from 98-00. They used it for some early 2001 trucks as well.

almost anything can be repaired if you are willing to put in the time to do it. one other possibility is to splice in new pieces of wire using solder and shrink tube.
