My son just totaled his 2000 4x4 on the ice. I bought a 2001 4x4 to replace it. Both trucks are 4 liters n 4x4. The only differences between the two is the 01 is an extended cab and auto transm. The 01 has 149k on the odometer and the 00 has 135k. I know the 2000 engine well and it has no leaks. I am going to swap the two engines. I plan on replacing the oil pan gasket, rear main seal, and front timing chain cover seal while the engine is out. I cant seem to locate the part number for the front crank seal. Any info from TRS?

Also, I will free up the exhaust while it's out. Ive located AP parts for a 94 4.0 that doesnt have cats. A 94 ohv is the same dimensions as the 2000 4.0. What obstacles will I encounter in retrofitting the catless y-pipe and intermediate pipe? TIA!

The 2001 Ranger(2001-2011) has the 4.0l SOHC engine, 1990-2000 Ranger has the 4.0l OHV engine, much different engines

But they did use the same motor mounts and transmission/bellhousing bolt patterns

There will be quite a bit of rewiring needed
2000 computer into the 2001
2000 engine wiring harness AND PATS module and wiring harness into the 2001, and swap ignition cylinders for PATS key match

If using a 1994 4.0l then use the 2000 4.0l upper and lower intakes with injectors to match the 2000 computer wiring
Also need to use 2000 Cam sensor/synchro in the 1994

Will also be some speedometer issues as Ford changed in 2001 to OSS sensor(computer driven) vs VSS sensor(GEM driven)

The 4.0l OHV topped out at 160HP
The 4.0l SOHC did 207HP
So you are losing 47horsepower with the swap.............................

I would reconsider and maybe rebuild or replace the 4.0l SOHC vs all the work in swapping in the lower powered 4.0l OHV
Outside of the timing chain issue the 4.0l SOHC was just as relaible as the 4.0l OHV, just need to change the 2 timing chain tensioners every 100k miles, which is not that expensive or hard to do

RonD, thanx for the reply. I know the sohc n ohv are two completely different engines. I didnt realize the 01 had the sohc. I wont do the swap in this case. I have about ten FL-1A oil filters for the 2000. Happen to know the motorcraft oil filter pn for the 01, offhand?

So... silly question. How hard would it be to swap the wiring harness from one truck to the other? Or would that be having to include swapping all the peripherals as well?

Its the computer and its engine wiring harness thats all that needs to be swapped
And PATS with keys

Fuel system is the same
Lights and cab electrics are basically the same

Speedometer would be an issue, fixing that would be decided by transmission model being used and manual or automatic
Worst case would be spending $105 on a SGI-100BT unit that's interfaced with rear axle ABS sensor

But swapping in another 4.0l SOHC doesn't require any of that, and you have 47 more horsepower

Recommend changing the OilPressurized TimingTensioners ASAP unless you know thats been done recently.
Some early 2001 ModelYear V6~4.0L~SOHC engines had an OilFilter with English SpinOn Threads
but if built after mid 2000, its likely the Metric threaded MotorCraft# fl820s or K&N# hp2011.
