I am new to this site as well as working on my 2000 ranger. About 4 months ago, i installed a cold air intake. It worked perfect for about a month, then i started to notice a great loss in power and a knocking sound. The knocking only happend after getting off the inerstate. I could drive around town all day without a single knock. I put my stock air box and hose back on along with new air filter, spark plugs, spark plug wiring, and fuel filter. The knocking stopped, but the power just hasnt came back and when it idles, it sounds as if its going to die then comes back then sounds like it will die and so on. Any sugestions? MAF might be dirty?

Update

The check engine light finally came on. Hooked a code reader up to it. Came up with P0171 and P0174. These are bank 1 is running lean and bank 2 is running lean. At first was thinkning it was a vacum leak then heard vacum leaks only cause one bank to run lean. Sugestions? MAF is diry? Is MAF hard to remove and clean?

Thank You

You heard incorrectly...clean your maf sensor first. Second check for vacuum leaks. Third, don't run your vehicle under heavy load....detonation is very bad and can destroy your engine.

If you've installed a cold air intake, why don't you know where and how to remove the MAF?

I know where it is but I have never cleaned it. When I put my cold air intake, it came with one. So I just clipped wires into it.

It came with it? Why are you clipping wires? Let's see a pic of this cold air intake.

I'm guessing it wasn't installed correctly and/or the MAF you installed is not the correct size, hence the wondering idle.

Test your input and output voltage on both mafs when they are plugged into the harness while the engine is running. If the one that came with your intake is out of spec if will cause a lot of things to go haywire. The maf will ultimtely override how your engine will perform aswell (if you have an auto tranny) how firm your trans will shift. In my opinion, I'd switch the mafs. Sounds like the maf that came with the intake may be bad or out of spec.

Visit this TRS Tech link and get ahold of a good multimeter....
