i got a 2000 ranger 3.0l 2wd automatic trans and i seem to be getting around 13mpg city... im only 16 so i dont know a whole lot but im thinkin i should be gettin better then that. i dont got a heavy foot because ill just burn more gas, i replaced the air filter, theres no engine lights coming on and it seems to be running fine. prob gonna be changing the spark plugs in order to try and get better mileage. do u guys have any other ideas to get better mileage or maybe know why im gettin such bad mileage?

If it's all city driving then yes. I picked up a 00 3.0L 4x4 a couple of months ago and I'm only getting about 15-18 mixed.(City and Hwy) It is winter up here though. Do a good tune up, check your O2 operation (I had a lazy one on the passenger bank upstream) and just learn to love it.

tune up:
plugs, wires, clean the mass airflow sensor, pcv valve, fuel filter, and look into changing the o2 sensors, clean the throttle body, and add some good fuel injector cleaner (lucas) at your next fill up, you said you changed the air filter already,

when i did all that to my truck at 118000 it made it run like a race car and i picked up 2 mpg:icon_thumby:

also check your gear ratio, if you have 4.10's your only gonna get 17-18 mpg at best, at least in my experience, and thats on the highway driving like a puss, granted i do have 4x4

i agree with all this , but i wouldnt suggest cleaning the MAF , doing that can cause bad things to happen , i have seen it , and my advisor at college does not suggest that , and i trust him

but yea , deff. check your gear ratio

hey i dont believe anything is wrong with you truck ive been getting 13-14 mpg. but most of my driving is back and forth to school my engine barley gets a chance to warm up. And after Christmas i took a 200 mile trip almost all highway and got 24mpg im pretty sure my 94 auto supercab epa highway mileage is 22mpg.

p.s. 3.73 gears

Yup, the 3.0 eats gas with in city short drives. I have gotten 13-14 mpg winter and 15-16 mpg summer when driving 14 miles oneway to work along Rt3 in NJ (IE toward Lincoln tunnel). Then started working in Albany, NY area, temporay housing comute was 65 miles oneway 50% county highway, 50% interstate, RPMs were kept down around 2500, 22-23 mpg. Now live close to work, 4.5 miles, mpgs back to 13-14 winter and 15-16 summer.

how many miles are on the truck? have you checked basic things like tire pressure, checked for dragging brakes, make sure your speedometer is correct, etc.

my trucks only got about 75,000kms on it, i guess you guys are right and it just plain sucks on gas haha. iv been on the highway before and it gets about 25mpg at 110km/h but i just thought there shouldent be that much difference. and it dont help its winter and where i live it was getting to be about -40c (-50c with the windchill). havent had did a whole lot to it yet, just bought it in october and i think ill finish payin my dad back before i start messin it up lol.
