Well long story short... I got it apart and lined up the dimaonds on the cam and the oil pump. I rolled the crank around untill I thought I had it on TC and installed the belt. Cranked the engine and timing totaly off. Screwed around with it for hours. Aligned the cam with an indentation instead of the dimaond and it started, but running poorly. I know I'm close, but there must be an easier way than trial and error.

The oil pump doesn't matter I don't think. The cam should have the mark on the tooth, and on the cover, if the one on the cover is missing, use a string between the cam bolt center, and the oil pump bolt center, the string should line up with the mark on the cam gear. If it does, and it still runs bad, you may have bent a valve, but that seems unlikely with these motors.

The oil pump does matter as it's what the cam sensor is read from on a 2.5L, it's a non interference engine so it shouldn't have hurt anything.

I don't remember the timing marks other than the keyway on the crank goes up for TDC, I found a pic somewhere when I put mine together a year and a half ago...

Thanks, I still can't get it to run right. It sounds like it is pinging or hitting a valve, since it should have not hit a valve, I am leaning towards pinging. This would make sence if It is out of time. It is load and running rough. When I tried to line up the "Dimonds" it wouldn't fire at all just pop a little through the exhuast.

There's pics of the timing marks on a '97 HERE, that should be identical to your 2.5L

There is diamonds on the oil pump and triangles on the cam.
