Compared to? 4x4? 4x4 will always be better, rocks are more of a pain on 2wds, "mud" is on a conditional basis, sand as well. 2wds can to a "little" bit of everything, biggest difference is when you find something you cant do...you can't just click it over to 4x4 and carry on. You either back up, go around, or hook up to someone to pull you out.
4cyl? 3.0? 4.0? A little power + locker + gears + probably a good set of 33's is about the best you can do on a 2wd
my 2wd drive loves it offroad and the only time i got stuck was in snow cuz about 10" below the fresh powder was hard ice so i couldnt get any traction and neither could the 4x4s, if you have the right equipment on a 2wd they are very capable, i run the 3.0, detroit locker, 33s and 4.10s, i want lower gears though ie 4.56 or 4.88
I agree with Rico, "momentum" is your friend in a 2wd off road. It will take some experience, but I found that offroading in a 2wd can really teach you how to drive when you can't hit the "cheater button" to get out of a tough spot. It's easy to get stuck if you don't know what you're doing, but with time you learn how to approach different situations. As others have said, better gearing and a locker will help. However, I've taken my 4cyl. 3.73, open diff ranger through more stuff than many 4x4's. Be prepared to go through some ball joints and wheel bearings if you plan on offroading often in a 2wd. All that momentum can be rather hard on the front end!
Adding some weight to the bed helps tremendously. I also pick my lines wisely, always choosing the path of least resistance. As others have said, a skillful driver can take a modestly equipped 2wd most places a 4wd will go (not all though).
lol... lots of gas and a whole lot of hope usually worked for me...yet it was always those " pffft , i can do that in my 2wd watch this " moments , those usually remind me why theres 4wd....
