i have an 89 4x4 ranger regular short bed and i need a gas tank and straps, but everywhere i have called says they only have it for a 2 wheel drive but the pictures i found look identical to mine, does anyone know the difference and if the 2 wheel drive tank will work on my truck?
thanks in advance for any info provided.

i hope this helps. I dont know if there is a difference but go to a junk yard and take the old ones if possible if not most will let you return for "store credit" to get the other if its not right. I have had to do that before. or if someone has a catalog from a aftermarket suppler can check and tone in. I have a 88 long bed if you need pics i dont mind helping.

according to my parts computer (auto value) the drive line is not the determining factor, it is the wheel base that determines gas tank size. also it appears that the bronco II tank is readily available but not the ranger tank. straps for the 108" WB run $26.69 if it has a plastic tank. there is no listing for straps for a metal tank. hope this helps some.

'89 and up rangers all have plastic tanks, get the straps from the same wheelbase truck as yours shouldn't matter 4x4 or 4x2, if they say it matters, just ask for a 4x2 part...

I went to www.car-part.com and they only list the gallons as the difference, 17 vs 21. Check the site out, then you'll know if the yard has the tank you want before you call.

I had this problem too. the plastic guard on the front of my tank caused my tank to rust out and all i could find were tanks for a 2wd so we just bought one and it's longer, and i had to use a longer bolt to hold it in, so i guess it's generally bigger. but i did get it to fit and everything hooked to it.

oh, right, the 4x4 has a metal skid plate, and the 4x2 has a plastic chafe plate, that's the difference on the straps... the tanks themselves are the same, I don't think the 21gal tank will fit on a standard cab short bed without doing something custom... so you're probably stuck with the 17 gal tank.

thank you everyone for your quick responses, i found one at a junk yard this afternoon off a 1990 4x4 and my dad and i are going to put it on tomorrow. it looks like everything is going to work fine. thanks to everyone for all the great advice- this a great site for people like me that don't have the money to pay to have work done all the time, i would say i've save 200 dollars if this works out for me. i'll keep ya posted!

one piece of advice, it's easiest to take the bed out to do the job if you didn't already come up with that idea...

thanks for the advice, but i already had it off from when we did some body work on it and changed the rear cab mount frame bracket.
