Degreased the 2.9 engine, a4ld, on my '87 B2, hit it with water and there's an obvious leak in the manifold, engine sputtered when water hit it. Got white smoke the next day when I started it. Haven't had a chance to play with it yet due to my work schedule, but some water obviously got into the block. Should I run it out or immediately drain oil and start checking for leak/bad gaskets?

And what year(s) 2.9 will swap into the '87 as a plug and play with no mods?

Don't be so quick on the draw colorado.. You most likely hit a wire with the water and the next day you saw normal startup smoke..
If water could enter in such an amount that it would do anything to the running of the engine then it wasn't hardly running in the first place! Think on it again before going off the deep end.
Get a small propane tank and with a hose on it put propane all over the intake and vac hoses to see if the engine enjests the propane. If you do have a leak the engine will idle faster when the propane hits it.

^yeah that too +1

Thanks for the info, I thought about it last night and figured that it would have had a huge leak to take in enough water to do any damage. Had to deal with wiring issues and doors today so I didn't even get close to lifting the hood. I'm going to get to the engine on Tuesday or Wednesday evening, depending upon the weather. I'll go over everything once to check torque on bolts and then give it a shot.
