2 "D" Position!?

Hi,
Stupid question for you fine amateurs, but too bad, not even afraid of ridicule, I'll give it a go:
Why are there two "D" positions on my automatic gear selector?
My ranger is a 4l v6 OHV from 93 with A4LD gearbox.

If I remember it correctly, as you shift from "Park", the first "D" position (D inside the circle), lets the transmission work with overdrive operation included. The second "D" position (D only), blocks the overdrive from working, and makes the transmission operate as a 3 speed only automatic.

Yes, the circled D is OverDrive

So I’ll expand a little…

The circled D is overdrive, which is where it should be for normal driving. If you’re loaded down or pulling a trailer you should put it in the D without the circle because it disengages overdrive and holds gears longer to reduce shifting and heat build up.

Some side notes…

If the transmission hasn’t been serviced in recent history, it would be a good idea to change the fluid and filter along with adjusting the bands. It’s not a very complicated process, just a bit messy to drop the pan. If you’re willing to get more involved I’d recommend a shift kit (TransGo) at minimum and there’s some other valve body work that can be done. Helps keep these transmissions happier longer, lol

Back when i was driving yard truck they hired a kid (like 19) and the old LTL ford i drove had a foot dimmer.

He never seen one before.

He asked me what it was...i told him it was a wastegate bypass for the turbo to give me unlimited boost and alot of extra power for a short time.

He was sorely disappointed the night i was plowing snow and he used my truck.

Off topic...yes...but kinda the same
