2.9L with 4.0L fuel pressure regulator - anyone else run into this ??

Did a search but couldn't find an answer to this one:

I have a 1990 Ranger 2wd / 5 speed with a 2.9L engine. Fuel pressure regulator started leaking (slight rough idle & gas smell were tip offs). Pulled the regulator off & looked it up on AutismZone's online parts search but the part did not look exactly the same. A trip to the parts store confirmed that the regulator from my engine is for a 4.0L engine.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Are both AutoZone & Advance auto both listing the wrong regulator (confirmed at both places in person) for the 2.9L engines - or - has someone put a 4.0L regulator on my truck sometime in the past?

Thanks!

Parts look up online & in person say this is the correct regulator:

THIS is the regulator identical to the one removed from my truck:

Thanks for the reply.

On that ebay pic: Only difference I see is that the fuel line inlet is not threaded on mine... my FPR has a 'quick connect' type of fitting that looks like a piece of straight fuel line. You can see what mine looks like with the second link in my original post.

Does the 4.0L fuel rail etc work on a 2.9L? Maybe they used whatever was laying around that week or my truck is a 2.9L transplant recipient...

no, 4.0 fuel rail wont fit on a 2.9 its actually part of the intake. the FPR on my 4.0 is threaded as well. the early 4.0's may have used the quick connect style?

LOL autismzone...

Why don't you go to a dealership? Their database is likely to be far more accurate than almost anywhere else.

Can anyone confirm what motor this FPR fits? This is the one that fits & is supposedly for a 4.0L. Picked it up today.

Forgot to update for the next guy...

That pic is of the correct FPR for my 2.9L.
BWD (brand name) part number 21862z .

That will fit an EARLY 4.0L, up to mid-1991.

All the later models had a threaded return line fitting that doesn't leak nearly as badly.

I retrofitted mine to the later FPR due to repeated problems with leaking "quick releases." Unlike the springlock fittings used on the pressure side, this one is SMOOTH and has a release with a couple of sharp blades that bite into the tube.

But the 2.9L regulators are different -- they have a barbed fitting used to connect a short segment to a spring-lock connector.
