just wonder whether the 4.0 will be a better swap for my 2.9l. the 2.9 is currently giving me a ton of issues it idles randomly has a load knock and loses power when ever i hit the accelerator and then dies totally. I'm finally at a point were i think i will just be a better bet to swap i just don't know what to swap it with.
i already read a great post about the 4.o swap and it seams simple enuf but what about the 5.0 is it more or less complicated and will i need to swap trans. the b2 has an auto 4x in it so will i need to find a different one or can i stik with it? there are no 2.9l any were in my area so i already know I'm not staying with it. so any info or links will be great.

thank you

check the forums latest post its full of info and opinions..

Much easier to do a 302/5.0L swap than would be the the 4.0L V6. You would need all the same basic parts for both swaps, so you might as well do the one that you can make power with. PLUS, you can use the 2.9L engine harness for the V8 swap...

i wouldnt say that.

in a bind the 4.0 is a drop in. some radiator hose mods or a 4.0 radiator are about it.

depending on year of the donor engine and wiring and actual needs....it is as simple as laying it in there and hooking up two power wires. of course wiring a efi v8 isnt much either depending on what the donor is. but people tend to trainwreck it either way.

the doner is going to be either a 93 explorer 94 arostar i can get the star for 700 and thats with the the guy droping it off and picking it up or the explorer for 500 i also have a cople of outher ops to go with but no price was given yet. i have also read the swap sticky about a dozen times and still not sure about a few things. seems like every one ses some thing different.

I agree that the 4.0L and the 2.9L block are very similar (both Cologne V6s). BUT IIRC there was never a 4.0L with a distributor. So all that will need changed correct?? So that would also necessitate an ECM swap along with whatever wiring is needed.

whether your swapping a 2.9 for a 2.3 or a 4.0 or 5.0 the eec harness and pcm need to go with it.

in a bind.....is just that. i can drop a 4.0 in if i was broke down in the woods with minimal...and i mean minimal tools.
