We (my son's first vehicle who will be getting his license in Feb. 2010) have an opportunity to obtain a 4.0L V6 from a 1993 Explorer 4WD and want to replace a 2.9L in our 87 Ranger 4WD that just cracked the heads. I need to get a list of items that I will need to obtain along with the engine for this swap. It currently has the FM 115 5sp transmission in it and I don't know if it will work with the 4.0 engine.

We will be hiring out the installation of the engine and any wiring that must be done, I simply need to obtain a shopping list of the necessary elements to successfully get the task completed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Good luck with this. I'm planning on doing the very same swap on my 87 ranger with a 4.0 from a 91 exploder.

The transmission will work but as many people will tell you, It is only marginally strong enough for the 2.9. I would upgrade to a 4.0 M5OD Transmission.
