2.9l shift points

I shift mine around 2000-2500 rpm in normal driving,it seems the engine is happy around that rpm. I think that's right around the torque peak.

Peak torque is at 2600 rpm. I shift my between 3000 and 3500. The motor will be most efficient when it operates around 2600 rpm. I would shift above 2600 so that it will put you closer peak torque when you are in the next gear.

I'd agree with being around 2800-3500 for 1st - 3rd, then I usually go for 2000-3000 for 4th and O/D as I am already moving pretty good and don't really need to push the engine as high to gain the speed.

Will push her to 4 if I'm really trying to haul-ass

Cheers

hell when i play around i get mine up to about 5 but usually i shift at 3000

If I need to accelerate a little quicker I go to around 3000. I shift kinda early if no one is around but I don't bog the engine at all which is as bad as over revving it.

Peak torque

"Warren 86 Ranger",

Yes the peak torque for a stock 2.9l is 2,600 RPM. I attempt to shift right around 2.5k; it has proven to me that driving the torque curve is easy on gas and good for the engine too.

I have pulled some redline shifts but in general 2.5k is my shift. Additionally, when I am towing, I don't use overdrive or exceed 2.5k RPM. Everyone behind either understands that I am not a 7.whatever TURBO DIESEL and is marveled that I can tow anything or passes my with discust when legal. I am good with either one, since I too am MARVELED at what the 2.9l that could, can do.

I usually shift between 3500-4000 in normal driving, I've noticed that shifting much higher than 4500 is completely pointless, It seems to get "wheezy" above that, no matter what the circumstance. The 2.9 is a peaky little motor, it seems to perform best in a pretty narrow rpm range.
