Do thet make any kind of rebuild kit for a 2.9l. Or would i be better off just putting in a bigger engine. My 2.9l is a dog, very sluggish, it has 177K miles.

i'm about to do the same to my 2.9l. call your local napa auto parts store. they have a kit that includes everything you would need for $700. you can also take stuff out of the kit and tailor it to fit your needs and make it cheaper. the fella i talked to said it came with name brand parts and felpro gaskets. i'll probably be goin with them.

i've been looking at other places too, but i cant find a full kit and i dont have to pay for shipping if i buy it here in town.

look at the codes on your drivers side door near the latch. take the codes and look them up and it'll tell you what your gear ratio is and what axle types you have. i'd get a chiltons or haynes manual before you undertake this project, it'll have drawings of how everything goes together in case you get stuck.

oh and btw, google headers for 2.9 v6 and you'll get a bunch of matches. i think you're lookin into doing the same thing i am with my 2.9. i'm lookin at gettin these headers myself, but there are others.

you will need to figure out how to keep the egr if you want those headers. or you can eliminate the egr and run an 88+ 2.9 computer

Theoretically, it also reduces some of the NOx emissions. It isn't absolutely crucial, except with inspections and all...

I rebuilt my 2.9 with parts from LMC trucks (mail order). I found their prices the cheapest. Between the machine work and parts, it cost me about $1200.
I used pace setter headers (another $200), I wouldn't use them. I had a lot of fit issues.
I'm running 4:10 gears with 30" tall tires. I was running 3:73 gears and first gear didn't turn the tires too well so I changed the rear end to a posi with the 4:10 gears. I had to change the speedo gear which still is a little off (3 mph fast). I think it was a 17 tooth speedo gear.
All in all, the rebuilt 2.9 has plenty of torque but it's not a highway runner with the 4:10s. I've been running two years now without problems. Looking back a 5.0 may have been less expensive and my truck is only 2WD with a 4" lift and I'm only getting around 17 mpg with the 2.9, 4:10 gears and 30" tires.
