I just got a motor to replace the one in my B2 and it needs valve cover gaskets while I was in there I was thinking of maybe taking the rocker's and pushrods out and cleaning them out.

What do you guys think? Good, bad, waste of time? If I should what should I soak them in?

Thanks: Steve

Once you get a the valve covers off have a look at the sludge build up, if it looks clean then I wouldn't bother.

The 2.9l valve train tapping comes from low oil pressure at the lifters caused by 2 worn cam bearings, and cleaning out the push rods won't help.
And you will have to reset the rockers if you remove push rods

Ya, I've read it's usually the cam bearing's, but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the rocker tubes can clog also.

The pushrods are solid so it would just be surface cleaning.
It might be worth pulling the rocker shaft off both engines and checking for wear on the shaft. Push the rocker arm to the side and look at the bottom of the tube, this is where the greatest wear will be. Mine were a little worn so I rotated the tube 180 degrees to put the unworn side to the bottom. The bottom gets the most wear because of the pressure from the valve & pushrod. This is not a perfect solution because there is still wear on the bushing in the rocker arm, but it's free and better than nothing.

Well this is what it looks like....

Oil came out of all the holes, so I guess it'll be good enough.

It looks nasty, but once you start cleaning where do you stop? I would probably just clean the inside of the valve cover, the gasket surfaces, and put them back on. Much more and you could start knocking chunks into the engine.
Being diligent with your oil changes might slowly start cleaning the gunk off.

Man that is dirty as heck, switch to some synthetic oil and be timely with your oil changes, don't cheap out on the oil and filters and over time it will clean itself out. DO NO USE OIL FLUSH ADDITIVES, they will release gunk in large amount and will do more harm then good. I personally use Royal Purple HPS full synthetic and their filter. This is what mine looks like

I know the potential for damage is there, but I had good luck with draining 1qt of oil and adding some cheap ATF 26 miles before doing an oil change. The oil was full of visible chunks and the filter was heavier than normal.

I've never seen oil look so nasty coming out of an engine.

What's sad is how clean the junk motor I just took out is, minus the dirt.

But I found the lack of power and blow-by issue....
