Did a search but can't find the answer. Can a latter 5R55E transmission from a Ranger with a 4.0 be swapped into an 88 Ranger with a 2.9L engine? :icon_confused:

They bolt up, but I dont know how much of a direct swap it is.

not sure what year yours is, but the bell housings match for the 2.8, 2.9, and 4.0 blocks up through the ohv engines, iirc. the 3.0 v6 had a different pattern.
try looking ni the Tech Library for more info, and good luck.

oh, and Welcome to TRS!!

i m thinking the electronics are different. i know when i was looking for an auto for my 88 i was told it had to come from an 88 or 89 ranger or 88 bII for the electronics

you will have to get the ECM / PCM from the vehicle from the 5r55e. It is fully computer controlled the a4ld is not. I don't think it would work. And the 5r55e is a slush box - why not M50d?

The 5r55e is completely computer controlled. I have heard of a stand-alone computer that can control it. That would be the only way it would work.

They make stand-alone computers that can run just about any engine in the world in any car. Transmission computers are very rare though, unless its a trans that a lot of hot rods use, and then they usually just go with a manual or a non-electronic older automatic.

Baumann Engineering is the company that makes the stand alone computers for trannies
