ok so im trying to smog my truck 86 ford ranger 2.9 auto and it failed smog do to the fact that the egr did not recive signal... so im just replaceing all kinds of stuff so far new EGR valve, EGR vaccum solenoid, new solenoid for egr (i cant remember the name the little black box that bolts on to the intake that has a electriacal connection and vaccum hose also that connects to the egr) , new coolant temp senser (not the one that goes to the gauge the one that goes to the computer) im a missing anything? so the truck it has vaccum to the solenoid the solenoid has power.. but i only read about half a pound of vaccum at the egr valve which is right accourding to the book, but it does not change with a load on engine or no load it stays the same so it remands a fail for smog.. any imput on correct opperaton or how to check for whatever im missing i need this to smog and this is the only deal holding me up/...

Did you reset the computer every time you changed or cleaned a sensor. Make sure everything is plugged in connections are clean and run the codes KOEO when it starts giving you codes end the test. That will erase the memory then disconnect the battery for 1/2 an hour to reset the computer. Then start it and run it for 20 minutes at medium speeds and while it is still hot run the codes KOEO. You can get the code reader at any part store or you can use a VOM or test light look in the tech library under EEC-IV diagnostics it will show you how to use the VOM or test light to pull the codes.

I have nor reset the computer I figured with new parts it should just go automatically. I have a code reader however I didn't pull coded yet do to the fact the check engine light isn't on. I was wondering Also if anyone knows how much vacuum should be at the egr valve I know at idle it's around half a pound. What should it read when it opens up and were should the engine be? Idle or reved up or does it have to be under a load?

IME, I have never had to reset the computer to resolve an issue with these systems. Even one time I had a loose 60 pin connector which made it throw about every code you could image, just tightened it up and that was that (but figuring out what was going on was the battle :)) - these systems have adaptive learning. It's been said that it can actually make things harder, because the computer is then going to relearn some values off of sensors that are going bad, but still within a tolerable level. I just don't think it's necessary in most cases. If I ever kill the KAM, I always look at CM first to see what's there and write it down for later reference. You can clear stored memory with out killing you KAM (kill alive memory). You might erase something that can get you closer to the problem.

You won't ever see a check engine light because you do not have a functioning one.

I think this article will be of some help:

With everything connected and the engine running ground out the pin 33 side. The EGR vavle should open and the engine RPM should change.
Ford EGR valves will open 50% at 4 inHg of vacuum, and 100% at 8 inHg of vacuum.

thank you that does help out a lot.. and i didnt think i had to reset the computer... so now i konw how much vaccum it has when it is functioning i just need to know when it turns on.. i do belive i tested the wires going to the EVR solenoid and the one had 12V like it should and so did the other like i dont think it should... i replaced all the sensor that the computer gets signal from for the egr except the tps but i checked the ohms and it checked out ok... so last thing the computer... does it sounds like just the egr function of the computer is bad.. meaning replace the whole computer?

ok so i got a KOEO code 84 EGR vacuum solenoid or vacuum regulater or shutoff solenoid failure.. the hell is that? also a code memory 11... i thought i seen a 33 bout could not see it again.. any help guys?

The EGR solinoid is mounted on the passenger side fender well. It has a small vacuum line from the intake manifold attached to it and a vacuum line that goes over to the EGR valve. There is an electrical plug in connection to the solinoid. The solinoid is not expensive and available at most parts stores.I replaced mine about two months ago.
