2.9l ECU wiring ?

I have a 2.9l engine and 2wd manual transmission that I'm putting in an off road buggy that I'm building. the problem is that I don't have an ECU or wire harness and I'm not sure what year the motor is. My question is does it matter which ECU and Harness I use? Since I will be making it basically a stand along unit. or is there a certain ECU for certain year motors. I apologize if I'm posting in the wrong forum.

I think the only differences in the newer and older 2.9's was the 86-87 ones had a larger diameter 58 mm throttle body and a EGR valve. It would probably be best to get an ECM for the year range the engine is from. I don't think the exact year is important. Beyond that I'm not sure if it matters whether or not its 2 or 4 wheel drive. As far as the harness goes get a Haynes manual and check against the diagrams in the back to see what you need. You'll at least need the connectors off of one.

If I had to pick, I would go for 89+ for the power distribution box and non-EGR.
