Alittle back ground on me first. 17 I live in vegas attending a vocation high school for auto mechanics im big into the desert world be it trucks bikes or quads im also building a 67 vw bug with a fiberglass manix buggy but thats on hold till the truck is done. sorry about the messy format its 1:30 am got off work about half an hour ago my brain is fryed but i gota get this stuff up and answered asap.

Currently there is a very tired and old 2.3L in my 84 prerunner and id like to drop a 2.9 into it. I know that a 4.0 isnt much harder and would not cost a whole lot more than the 2.9 but I like the idea of building a 2.9 have wanted to since I had my 89. Already have the engine picked it up running and with the front end wiring harness and ECU for 500$ out the door. Has 180k on it doesnt seem to have leaked oil or anything. Now for the questions I have called summit and there is no piston for an actual .30 over bore closest is a .27 after talking with a friend i was thinking about going with something alittle closer to a .40 over does anyone know what size piston this would be if you could please tell me that would be greatly appreciated was going to go with the following main bearings cam bearings and rod bearings would this be my best choice im only looking to bore the engine and do alittle head work "alittle down the road when i have the cash" with eventually the tom morana box intake. and with the bore could i get away with the stock ignition or should i go with a MSD. might do a cam if i can find one but havent had much luck finding a mild cam for it. this is my DD so I dont wana go too crazy but at the same time im pushen 35s around might drop to 33s though.

and lastly what would be a realistic price to get a machine shop to get the bottom end bored and built.

Any and all advise is welcome.

Take the block to a machine shop and have them give you an estimate.

You can use 2.8L flat tops to bump up the CR. Over bore only enough to fit the pistons. Boring is for cleaning up and restoring cylinder walls, if you want more cubic inches on a small engine, you need to go with stroker kit.

What is Tom Morana's box intake?

Some basic head work, cleaning up the ports, and port matching would probably help. Valve springs, you will want to replace with a cam. Go with rocker arm spacers. 1.5:1 roller tips were available from camcraft, as well as computer friendly RV style camshafts. There are manufacturers that will make a custom grind for you (this would be the way to go), just need to ask around. But they will need a lot of specifics, they could probably help w/ springs.

Go w/ a '90 MAF computer.

I have built a similar engine, a 4.0L swap might come out cheaper in the long run. But that's just my opinion.

Yeah, do a 4.0 swap instead of all that work on the little engine. Boring doesn't do anything much for horsepower. Boring should only be done to fit new pistons..
Dropping in the 4.0 will have much better results than anything you could do to that little engine.
