A buddy of mine has an 88 ranger 4x4 with a 2.9. Went to start it the other day and it just clicked. We replaced the battery, starter and wire from the battery to the starter, also checked the relay, and fuses and still nothing. You turn the key and it makes a click noise and wont start. Any suggestions?

solenoid maybe sounds like your hearing the starter relay or your hearing the solenoid and the cable from the battery or the cable to the starter is not making good contact also check the ground cable from the battery to the engine block.

That relay could be bad, Ill have to get out there in the morning and check it again, might as well get a new one.

I wouldnt get a new relay just yet When you turn the key to the start position it triggers the relay witch sends a 12 volt current to the small wire on the solenoid. Check for voltage at the small single wire that goes to the solenoid when you turn the key to start. If you get voltage there that should trigger the solenoid to make contact to the starter from the battery. If there is a weak ground from the battery to the engine the starter wont turn and all youll hear is a click like a dead battery. If you hear a click its more likely that you have a bad connection somewhere.
