hey all, i know to set the valves on my '89- 2.9 following firing order..but do i set both valves to tdc compression stroke? or set the intake on the tdc comp, and exhaust on the tdc exhst stroke?

When turning engine over with ratchet watch exhaust valve go down (opening(Exhaust valve on right)) and then come back up and then watch intake valve go down and when it comes back up to the top position (it stops moving) spin the engine another 1/4 turn then that piston will be at tdc and you will be ready for timing for piston #1 if that is the valves you were looking at. Also if your using a Haynes repair manual it says to tighten them i believe 1 and a half turns after the rocker arm hits the valve but you really only want to tighten like 1 turn more otherwise you could get them too tight which would cause rough idle and valves would stay open.

No problem I am glad I can help
but just let me know if everything worked out

naw didn't work out so well. guess i should've followed th manuel(don't think 1 turn was enough) had like one or two rockers making noise before. now think there is more noise than before...bummed

why were you originally doing the valve timing? was it because of noise in the valves or did you rebuilt the engine? are you sure you have good lifters? i have rebuilt 3 2.9 engines and have done the valve timing on some others so i am wondering if there was a problem before you were doing the timing?
sorry it didnt work out for you the first time.
Are you sure the rocker arms were touching the valves before turning the 1 rotation more? you should push down and pull up on the rocker arm with your fingers to make sure there is no gap before turning 1 more rotation.

could well be that a few of th lifters are softy. had developed some clatter, thats why i decided to set the valves. i felt the rockers to make sure they were tight to pushrods when setting them. didn't mean it was your fault. prob time for new lifters...thanks buddy.

well you could always just try to tighten them some more and see what happens before you change any lifters because then you would have to take the heads off to get to some of them. Are you sure your getting oil to the top?
